About the Position: The Data Visualization Specialist serves as the technical expert for creating data visualization solutions that support institutional analytics and the development of other data tools for both internal and external audiences. The position is responsible for the development, implementation, enhancement and troubleshooting of dashboards. This work requires continuous engagement with OIEP staff, university leaders, and stakeholders to provide relevant and timely data solutions to support decision making across Mason. Responsibilities:
- Creates data dashboards and visualizations that enable timely, accurate access to GMU data by transforming data sets and quantitative and qualitative analyses into compelling visuals through the following:
- Enhanced self-service capabilities with user friendly, well-defined and clear reports, infographics, fact sheets, etc.;
- Sensitivity to end-user need, understanding, and data literacy;
- Alignment with template standards and branding as developed by OIEP;
- Continuous collaboration with OIEP team members;
- Modifications based on end-user experiences/needs and continuous improvement;
- Develops and updates templates, content, definitions, references, resources, and process documentation related to the publishing of OIEP dashboards;
- Develops protocols to ensure and monitor the accuracy, integrity, security, and functionality of OIEP's dashboards and reports;
- Collaborates with institutional colleagues within ITS and other functional offices to ensure consistency in dashboards and reports;
- Provides users with assistance in troubleshooting, as needed;
- Acts as the technical expert for dashboard-related questions and inquiries;
- Collaborates with OIEP staff to provide trainings across the university on how to use OIEP dashboards to inform decision making;
- Engages in national conversations to identify and anticipates institutional research needs through enhanced knowledge of industry developments and trends through participation in national conferences, scanning of online higher education sources, etc.; and
- Performs other related special and ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Experience in information design, social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, data analytics, computer or data science or other related fields (typically 2+ years);
- Considerable progressively responsible technical research or statistical experience including or supplemented by experience in the interpretation and graphic presentation of data;
- Proficiency in a data visualization tool (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, SASViya);
- Proficiency in SQL or SAS writing scripts to analyze data and perform data queries, creating reports with quantitative modeling, detail-oriented approach to data visualization and validation;
- Ability to develop techniques for handling a large variety of data and ability to analyze these data;
- Effective verbal and written communication skills;
- Attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently and in a team; and
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in data visualization, information design, media design, education, social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public administration, business, data analytics, engineering, computer or data science or other related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Considerable experience in designing and developing high-impact visualization solutions (typically 3+ years);
- Experience in higher education research, project management, and/or social science research;
- Experience running statistical models on higher education data sets; and
- Demonstrated knowledge of higher education data.
