Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. JOB SUMMARY

Under close supervision of the Carpenter Shop Supervisor, the Structural Trades Senior Building Maintenance Worker performs various minor remodeling, basic construction, and maintenance functions across the Structural Trades shops: Carpenter, Lock, Paint, and Sign Shops as needed and directed.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $26.22 - $28.93/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

80% - Construction Maintenance
Perform the following duties as needed under direct supervision:

  • Minor remodeling and construction of walls, windows, floors, ceilings, and roofs.
  • Assistance to the carpenter in removing existing structures. Walls may be of metal or wood construction and work may include application of sheet rock and other surface materials.
  • Rough and finishing work for new construction.
  • Basic mathematical computations such as reading measures, time-keeping, etc.
  • Hanging of both metal and wood doors.
  • Minor forming and pouring of concrete.
  • Assistance with preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.

10% - Maintenance & Repairs
Perform the following duties as needed under direct supervision:

  • Maintenance and repair of campus structures including patching walls and roofs, repairing or replacing doors and windows, replacing broken hardware and bathroom fixtures not requiring a plumber, and using various caulking and roofing products.
  • Assistance to Lock Shop with minor duties including key cutting, door tag installation, door hardware maintenance, and installation.
  • Assistance to Sign Shop with sign installation and maintenance.
  • Assistance to Paint Shop with graffiti removal.
  • Assistance to shops with preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.

10% - Shop Work

  • Perform millwork using power saws, planers, sanders, shapers, drill presses, band saws, and other shop equipment using proper safety procedures under the supervision of a qualified carpenter or other qualified Structural Trades personnel.
  • Inspect and make necessary repairs to the shop's interior hardware, tools, and equipment.
  • Work with other trade personnel as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write, follow oral and written instructions and perform basic mathematical computations required in the performance of skilled maintenance duties.
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity and initiative.
  • Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact and work effectively with members of the campus community.
  • Ability to work in busy, occupied buildings, offices and labs without disturbing occupants.
  • Ability to document daily work performed.
  • Ability to drive a pickup truck or van.
  • Knowledge of the use and safety procedures of various types of hand and power tools used in the carpentry trade, such as but not limited to, post-hole diggers, spirit levels, squares, sanders, grinders, planers, drills, power saws, etc.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in general construction techniques: wood and metal framing, sheetrock installation and repair, door and window installation, hardware installation, concrete forming and pouring, roof installation and repair.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic computer skills such as email, calendar, Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to learn Enterprise Asset Management System Software (CruzFix) work order tracking program.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to move construction materials, i.e., sacks, lumber, paper rolls, timber, fasteners, equipment, etc., from one location to another including locations accessible only by stairs or ladders.
  • Ability to move materials which may weigh up to 100 lbs. that requires the ability to use good judgment so that movement is done safely by using assistance from others or moving equipment when required.
  • Ability to occasionally work overtime with little or no advance notice.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
