General Notes

This is a grant funded position with an end date of 8/31/25, renewable based upon availability of funding, work performance, and progress toward research goals. This position will be assigned on-campus with an expectation to report to work on-site during the scheduled work week.

Purpose

The Director of Social Work will report to the Executive Associate Chair in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and work with executive Leadership, medical directors, and associate chairs in providing clinical and administrative leadership to social workers within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Works directly with the Department Chair and other leaders to develop and implement short and long-term planning for department needs, including developing and strategizing plans for staffing, hiring, budget oversight, onboarding and other personnel-related actions of all clinical social workers across the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

  • Provides direct supervision of social workers within their respective clinical settings within the department, with a focus on ethical patient care, interprofessional collaboration and ongoing professional development. Available for prompt consultation outside of the regular clinical supervision hours for emergent needs.

  • Responsible for development, standardization and oversight of documentation practices for social workers (including ongoing technical support regarding EHR and billing). Responsible for regular review of supervisee(s) documentation of patient encounters in electronic health records in a timely manner.

  • Communicates UT Health Austin policies, procedures, timelines, position duties and performance expectations to social work employees. Duties include monitoring and evaluation of employee performance, coaching, counseling, motivating and disciplining employees. Ensures that all social workers adhere to training requirements for UT Health Austin.

  • Represents Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences for internal and external speaking/presentation requests as needed.

  • Performs other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Substantial record of leadership and achievement in clinical social work. Hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from an institutional program certified by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Texas. Minimum of ten (10) years of post-degree clinical experience, with at least five (5) years of experience in interdisciplinary healthcare settings. At least five (5) years of experience in leadership, major projects, training and managing teams. Possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Computer proficiency required. Must be able to plan, organize and prioritize multiple activities, maintain positive relations with a wide variety of people and work collaboratively with all stakeholders. Flexibility is a critical skill. Must be eligible for credentialing with insurance panels.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Leadership experience with clinical operations, value-based healthcare delivery and integrated practice models. Board Approved Clinical Supervisor for Social Work. Have experience delivering care as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Doctorate in Social Work and/or advanced degree in related field (MPH, MBA, Healthcare Administration). Working knowledge with budgets and managing data. Familiarity with University systems including Workday and Athena. Working knowledge of UT policies and procedures.

Salary Range

$120,000+ depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
