SUMMARY

Reporting to the Roads and Bridges Administrator in the Department of Assets and Infrastructure (A&I), this field crew Construction Inspector position is responsible for road and bridge construction and maintenance work is completed in the safest manner, consistent with specifications, industry standards, and as directed by superiors. The position works under the direction of the Foreperson, but can receive direction from Roads and Bridges Superintendent and division Administrator. The construction inspector must be task oriented and have ability to track and report project details. Remote reporting using a variety of technology tools is required; successful candidates will have experience using MS Office software at a minimum.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- * Operation of county vehicles including pickup and dump trucks, and large and small excavation equipment;
- Complete and help oversee activities related to the maintenance and upkeep of the County's road and bridge inventory, including but not limited to: paving, patching, inlet repair, head wall construction, erosion control, grading, pipe installation and extension, curb installation, ADA Ramps, sinkhole stabilization, tree/brush/grass trimming/removal and other debris removal;
- Operation of small tools and other equipment;
- Completion, with direction and input, of basic carpentry and masonry experience;
- Participation in on-call service for emergencies after hours and on weekends;
- Operate snow removal equipment including salting, truck mounted snow plows, and de-icing tools;
- Coordinate project and maintenance needs with field foremen positions and with the Roads and Bridges Administrator, including site visits and monitoring of contractor work:
- Prepare and submit daily logs electronically;
- In coordination with supervisors and contractors, monitor project quality, schedule, and budget;
- Relay emergency matters and communications to appropriate staff;
- Assist with contract changes to ensure timely responses to change issues and ensure proper supporting documentation from Contractor.
- Follow and assist with the formulation of standard operating procedures, including quality control / assurance, document control;
- Coordinate activities with County contracted engineers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

- High School diploma required;
- Experience with road resurfacing projects and bridge rehabilitation and maintenance programs required, minimum 10 years preferred;
- 30 hour HASP certified or in process of obtaining required;
- NICET Certified preferred;
- Familiarity with PennDOT design and construction standards preferred, including but not limited to Publications 8 - Construction Manual; Publication 19 - Field Test Manual; Publication 21 - Filed Computations; Publication 72M- Roadway Construction Standards; Publication 213 - Work Zone Traffic Control; Publication 219- Bridge construction Standards; Publication 408 - Specifications;
- Demonstrated commitment to safety with knowledge of best practices;
- Excellent communication skills, especially with public and subordinates;
- Ability to perform work throughout Montgomery County;
- Valid commercial PA driver's license and can provide own transportation to job sites, and can operate County trucks and tractors;
- Computer systems familiarity, minimally MS Office required
- Ability to read architectural and engineering design plans and specifications preferred.
