Senior Director, Planned Giving and Principal Gifts

Position Description:

The Senior Director, Planned Giving and Principal Gifts will be responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding principal and planned gift prospects. They will work closely with faculty, community leaders, senior administrators and volunteers, to secure principal and planned commitments at the $2,000,000+ level in support of research, education, community engagement and patient care initiatives supporting Froedtert Hospital Foundation and the Medical College of Wisconsin programs.

The Senior Director will serve as a guide to other fundraising professionals to secure appropriate planned gift and deferred give opportunities. The Senior Director serves as an expert in planned gifts to members of MCW/FHF's staff in their gift discussions with potential donors, working to manage the administration of all active estates and other testamentary gifts, including communications with attorneys, fiduciaries, and other advisers. The Director will consistently train MCW/FHF's staff on relevant planned giving topics. The Senior Director will build and execute engagement and stewardship programming for all planned giving donors in partnership with stewardship and events colleagues.

The Senior Director will bring a specialized set of skills and expertise in planned and estate philanthropy. They will deeply understand technical aspects of planned giving vehicles and the relevant tax and estate consequences of these vehicles and how they can be used to enhance MCW/FHF's philanthropy efforts. The Senior Director will manage the processing of stock gifts, facilitation of life insurance premiums and gifts, bequests, planned and life income gifts, in conjunction with the operations team. The Senior Director will be highly collaborative and a distinct leader in the Office of Institutional Advancement, charged and excited to educate others on the impact and opportunity of estate giving.

The successful candidate will possess exceptional relationship-building skills, a proven track record of securing major and principal donations, and a deep understanding of relational philanthropic principles.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Philanthropy, provides leadership and direction to secure new and increased support from grateful patients, community leaders and friends of the institutions. Working in concert with key clinicians and researchers, responsible for elevating the reputation and prominence of Froedtert & MCW.
  • Understand the mission and philanthropic priorities of the Froedtert Hospital Foundation and the Medical College of Wisconsin and works collaboratively across the organizations and departments to build collective success. Comprehensive understanding of the strategic clinical and research, education, community engagement and patient care priorities, as well as specific clinical department priorities and needs.
  • Build and strategically steward and manage a portfolio of principal and planned gift prospects.
  • Develop integrated giving opportunities aligned to donor interests and the strategic priorities of Froedtert Hospital Foundation and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Creatively develop and implement innovative strategies for the successful solicitation of planned and principal gifts.
  • Working with the Prospect Research team, assess prospects, develop and execute strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of prospects to achieve individual and departmental goals.
  • Ability to raise donor sights, articulate aspirational goals and ideas, set priorities, present philanthropic opportunities and close planned and principal gifts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with boards, clinical department leaders, faculty, staff, and volunteers associated with his/her portfolios/programs; meet with colleagues across campus to coordinate and execute strategies, utilizing experience and knowledge to build consensus.
  • In partnership with the creative services team and faculty/staff, make persuasive verbal and written cases for supporting these key priorities, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific projects and programs needing support and ensure effective stewardship of donor relationships.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership, development team members, and other stakeholders to develop and implement a comprehensive planned gifts fundraising strategy aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Accountable to annual individual performance goal metrics as well as strategic goals and objectives of department.
  • Prepare and work within budget and monitor resources and expenditures under span of control.
  • Future management of a small team (1-2 FTEs) is likely.

  • Demonstrated analytic and strategic thinking capabilities. Experience with fundraising database software and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • A highly developed ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information related to both alumni and donors, as well as employees.
  • Work closely with colleagues across departments, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, and programmatic staff, to leverage resources and maximize fundraising outcomes.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

Minimum education: Bachelor's Degree

Minimum experience: 8 years of successful professional fundraising experience and a proven track record of closing 6 and 7-figure gifts in a complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Experience: Planned giving experience. Philanthropy in a health care or education setting.
