Description

The Missiles & Aviation Solutions Division, within the Leidos Airborne Systems Business Area, has an opportunity for a Computational / Applied Aerodynamics Engineer to work at our Huntsville, AL campus supporting a variety of flight vehicle programs. We are seeking a highly motivated aerospace engineer to apply Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes and methodologies to real-world missile, aircraft, and launch vehicle flow physics.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Apply state-of-the-art CFD tools to the design and analysis of flight vehicles. Perform basic CAD geometry manipulation, meshing, setting up and running solutions on local and remote Linux-based clusters, and post-processing results into formats suitable for engineering analyses (data sets, plots, images, etc.).
  • Support aerodynamic design trade studies, performance assessments, and development of high-fidelity aerodynamic characterizations of flight vehicles.
  • Work independently with little oversight and as part of a broader multi-disciplined engineering team.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in applying theoretical, semi-empirical, & CFD tools to flight vehicle design and analysis problems.
  • BS degree in Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineering with strong academic performance that includes CFD or numerical methods related coursework.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate constructively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Willingness to try and learn new skills, and to refine existing skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineering.
  • Experience in applying state-of-the-art CFD tools such as Kestrel, OVERFLOW, USM3D, FUN3D, DPLR, and COMSOL to simulate flight vehicle flowfields (internal/external).
  • Experience in generating computational meshes with industry-standard tools such as Pointwise, ANSYS, or CFD-GEOM.
  • Experience in programming languages Python, Fortran, and/or C++ using UNIX/Linux OS.
  • Experience in industry-standard CAD software, particularly SOLIDWORKS.
  • Experience in chemically reacting flows, turbulence modeling, Chimera-Overset meshing, aerothermal modeling, aeroacoustics, blast-wave propagation, computer cluster administration, and parallel programming
  • Experience in planning and conducting wind tunnel tests.
  • Experience in flight vehicle conceptual design and propulsion system integration.
  • Active security clearance, SECRET or higher.
