Student Mentor, Parkland Peers

Currently seeking applicants for Fall 2024 semester and beyond.

The mentor is responsible for working with mentees, up to 5, through the Parkland Peers program which is powered by Mentor Collective by connecting with current students who share a familiar course of study, interests, life experiences, or aspirations in ways that work for both in modes and frequencies that are agreeable to both parties. Mentors will be assigned mentees through Mentor Collective.

The Mentor is a part-time, student worker position, with approximately
10-15 hours per week. The Mentor appointment is on a schedule established by
the employees coordinating the mentor program and the Dean of Counseling
Services. The position involves regular meetings with their mentees and
providing support and suggesting resources related to academics,
work-life-school balance, career, personal growth, and mental health. They are
not peer counselors and are not expected to provide for all of the mentee's
mental health needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Complete all training and onboarding which may include but is not limited to, Bandana Project training, Kognito training, student orientation, and Mentor Collective training as well as any training identified by the employees coordinating the mentor program.
  • Attend regular support meetings with employees coordinating the mentor program.
  • Regularly meet with their mentees in agreed upon methods and frequency which may include emails, texts, in-person meetings, or video chats.
  • Provide advice and guidance to students who are designated as their mentee on a wide range of issues throughout the year such as academics, work-school-life balance, career, personal growth, and mental health.
  • Actively aid and support students during the transition into college life.
  • Provide encouragement and inspiration to mentees.
  • Identify when a student may be experiencing difficulties and develop a plan of support with the employees coordinating the mentor program.
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of Parkland College's departments and resources to refer supports as appropriate.
  • Encourage use of college resources.
  • Understand confidentiality and do not discuss mentee information outside of the support meetings with the employees coordinating the mentor program and Mentor Collective.
  • Assist mentee to develop goals toward their education and mental health.
  • Accurately record contacts with mentees.
  • Communicate with employees coordinating mentor program with any concerns and needs for their own support.
  • Limit hours of mentoring to approximately 80% of time occurring in regular Parkland working hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student of Parkland College
  • Completion of at least 30 hours of college credits
  • A 2.0 GPA or above
  • Good academic standing
