Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a ReinsuranceSenior Financial Reporting Specialist!

About the role

Symetra's Finance - Reinsurance Reporting team is looking to add a new Senior Financial Reporting Specialist, with a focus on reinsurance accounting policy, risk transfer analysis, treaty review, and reinsurance accounting.We are looking for a highly technical individual contributor to be a subject matter expert for the reinsurance accounting (GAAP, Statutory and Bermuda-based Statutory) treatment of life, annuity, and other reinsurance treaties. You will prepare and review technical accounting documentation and presentations related to reinsurance and willcollaborateclosely with Symetra's reporting teams to ensure financial presentation and disclosure accuracy.

What you'll do in this role



  • Research and document technical accounting issues related to Reinsurance Accounting (GAAP, US Statutory and Bermuda Statutory)


    • Produce documented research of accounting treatment, including financial statement impacts and operational considerations, for new and complex transactions.
    • Develop and propose recommendations where judgement in application is required.
    • Discuss issues and coordinate with external auditors, as appropriate.


  • Technical reviewer of Enterprise Reporting deliverables for accounting accuracy


    • Review MD&A, Financial Statement footnotes, and other key management deliverables related to Reinsurance. May also draft disclosures.


  • Maintenance and review of Reinsurance Accounting Policies


    • Maintain, review, and revise existing reinsurance accounting policy documentation as needed.


  • Assist in the implementation of new reinsurance treaties and new accounting guidance.


    • Stay current with developments in the life insurance industry, participating in reinsurance related industry calls.
    • Identify and communicate new GAAP, Statutory and Bermuda-based Statutory guidance and interpretations affecting Symetra.


  • Prepare and deliver presentations and training on reinsurance related topics to a wide range of audiences.
  • Collaborate with Actuarial, Tax, Law and other teams in the evaluation of new reinsurance treaties.

Compensation

Salary Range: $110,300 - $183,800 plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program.

Who You Are:



  • High School Diploma is required
  • A BA/BS in Accounting, or Finance
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of experience in the technical accounting of life and annuity insurance and reinsurance, with significant exposure to complex reinsurance arrangements (such as modco, coinsurance with funds withheld, etc.) as well as offshore reinsurance transactions, is required,
  • Proficiency in the fundamentals of accounting principles for life insurance and annuity products
  • CPA or CPA-eligible, preferred
  • Experience with the preparation and review of financial statement and footnote disclosures
  • Possess technical accounting research skills and the desire to use them - this involves analyzing, documenting, and supporting conclusions
  • Exposure to internal controls over financial reporting and related documentation
  • Goal-oriented with a track record of task and project completion
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as the need arises (quarter and year-ends, ad hoc projects)
  • Self-managed - independently identifies and promptly completes research and related documentation
  • Proven ability to interact effectively and communicate complex reinsurance accounting guidelines and policies in an understandable manner to various levels of management, staff, and auditors
  • High expectations of yourself, with an irresistible urge to exceed them
  • Creativity, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor!
