Job Summary

We need to hire a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) as soon as possible to replace a previous coordinator, to work on clinical translational studies in the Chiu laboratory. The Chiu laboratory pioneers the development of novel sequencing-based assays for diagnosis of infections, including clinical metagenomic tests and assays based on patient's host response to infection. Current projects are focused on three major areas. The first is the identification of RNA gene biomarkers associated with manifestations of severe COVID-19 such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome of children (MIS-C), sepsis, Lyme disease and other tickborne infections, MPox infection, infection-associated chronic syndromes such as Lyme disease, long COVID, and chronic fatigue syndrome / myalgic encephalomyelitis. The second is in clinical validation and implementation of metagenomic assays for identification of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) from cerebrospinal fluid, plasma, and other body fluids.The third is in the identification of biomarkers for Lyme disease and other tickborne infections.

Under the supervision of Principal investigator (PI) Dr. Chiu and the project coordinators from different groups on UCSF, the CRC will manage the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), protocols and consent forms directed to collect samples from patients in support of these research studies. The CRC will consent interested patients for clinical studies, schedule patient visits, retain and build patient charts, keep accurate patient records, and manage all data entry. The CRC also will coordinate the collection of samples, as well as their processing and storage. The CRC will work closely with the Hospital laboratory technician and Coordinate research groups for the use of samples. The CRC will also conduct chart review of patient electronic medical records and assist in regulatory submissions to the FDA and communication and sample transfer with key research collaborators.

Responsibilities of the CRC also include, but are not limited to, preparation of samples for shipping to research and other clinical laboratories; database management; specimen banking; training of other CRCs or HTLs; patient chart review; and other tasks at the discretion of the project management and based on the evolution of the project and sample collection requirements.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $34.32 - $55.19 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population
  • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in biology or clinical related sciences
  • Two years of experience as clinical research coordinator
  • Two years of experience working in clinical laboratory and research operations
  • Experience in the manipulation of samples for acid nucleic extractions to understand process involved in the current research projects
  • Experience with data entry and data analysis programs
