  • Primary Objective of Position:
    Monitor MHS students in research lab setting. Support research instructors and maintain lab equipment and supplies. Preserve student safety under the supervision of the Minnetonka Research Director.

    Assignment:
    6 hours per day, 184 days per year
    $21.15 minimum hourly rate
    Benefit eligible position

    Job Requirements:
    1. Monitor and provide support to high school students working in a scientific research lab.
    2. Maintain science equipment and supplies in the research lab (troubleshoot unexpected issues, calibrate, and coordinate external service vendors).
    3. Support students in the use of and use/operate biosafety cabinets, incubators, centrifuges, HPLC, RT-qPCR, and other supporting laboratory equipment.
    4. Supervise students in the lab during extended lab hours (before school, after school, nights, and weekends) as needed and jointly agreed upon with the Research Director.
    5. Work with and support students using hazardous chemicals and biological materials (handling and disposal) using appropriate PPE.
    6. Maintain materials inventory, storage, and order materials as necessary.
    7. Ensure student adherence to safety protocols in a research lab.
    8. Track, receive, and inventory lab orders for all student projects.
    9. Set up and clean up the science laboratory and materials/equipment.
    10. Prepare, process, analyze, and store samples according to standard operating procedures.
    11. Monitor and maintain student sign-up schedules for lab access.
    12. Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and equipment service providers.
    13. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

    Job Qualifications:
    1. College degree or equivalent AND related lab experience.
    2. Evidence of science knowledge and experience.
    3. Experience working with high school-age students.
    4. Evidence of a basic understanding of the physical and biological sciences.
    5. Evidence of a working knowledge of chemical compatibility, hazards, and waste disposal.
    6. Ability to work effectively with high school students.
    7. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of school staff.
    8. Works independently and manages multiple protocols routinely.
    9. Effectively manages projects and workload as assigned by the Research Director.
    10. A willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, and equipment.
    11. Evidence of ability to respect, protect, and maintain confidentiality.
    12. Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with students, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
    13. Evidence of excellent problem-solving and organization skills with attention to detail.
    14. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed.
