DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW SOMeCA (SOAR/Student Media/Cultural Arts and Diversity) is a unit of Campus Life at UC Santa Cruz. SOMeCA is dedicated to the success of UCSC's campus-wide student organizations. SOMeCA supports the development of dynamic learning environments by offering mentorship, leadership training, organizational development advising, and event management services for student-initiated programs. JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of the SOMeCA Director and the Staff Evolution Subcommittee, the Program Manager will provide advising and administrative support for the student-initiated and student-governed programs of the Campus Sustainability Council / Student Environmental Center / Education for Sustainable Living Program. These programs guide the UC Santa Cruz community towards the use of sustainable (environmentally- and socially-responsible) practices on-campus. Specific responsibilities include: advising and oversight for student organizations, financial management, leadership development, administration, and supervision. APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $63,100 / Annually @ FTE 50% = $2,629.17 / Monthly. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount. - Provides ongoing transformational advising and development to student leaders participating in student organizations on a wide range of issues.
- Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues.
- Brings extensive knowledge to students engaged in issues of sustainability, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues.
- Advises and educates students in organizational development theories, problem solving, program planning, and leadership skills.
- Advises organizations in developing goals and objectives, governing documents, and organizational structures; applies leadership development theory in designing orientation programs.
- Advises on the continuing development of the Blueprint for a Sustainable Campus.
- Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of campus-wide documents that outline official and unofficial goals, priorities, history, best practices, and policies with regards to sustainability.
- Provides support for event and speaker logistics for advised organizations.
- Advises the Education for Sustainable Living Program academic course and lecture series; assists with accreditation process, grading, evaluation and appropriate policies and procedures.
- Identifies organizational potentials and problems, analyzes and recommends future directions or solutions; earns the trust of students of diverse backgrounds; exercises good judgment and discretion, particularly in sensitive or confidential matters; facilitates dialogues and mediate conflicts.
- Independently assesses and authorizes student organization events within established policies; advises students in budget strategies and use of multiple fund sources; assists in negotiations with performers and authorize contracts; when required, oversees the use of campus facilities.
- Serves as a liaison between student groups and campus units to problem solve and facilitates major events.
- Advises on the annual Campus Earth Summit with coordination from other campus units and student organizations
- Assimilates from oral and written sources a broad knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local statutes, campus policies, procedures, and resources; independently interprets and applies these with consistency to a wide variety of student-initiated programs; requests compliance and recommend sanctions when necessary.
- Attends sustainability-related demonstrations sponsored by advised organizations and serves as a liaison between students and affected administrative units; facilitates negotiations and makes recommendations for possible exceptions to campus policy; advises students regarding free speech rights of all parties and UCSC Principles of Community.
- Attends organizational meetings as directed (e.g. ESLP Core, SEC Steering, CSC Steering).
- Advises student organizers on following university policy for organizational hires.
- Advises organizations based on historical knowledge.
- Keeps relevant documents for advised organizations, and has knowledge of information in the documents.
15% - Leadership Development
- Administers a limited public service program.
- Identifies and creates student opportunities for academic, professional, and leadership development; enhance students' sense of belonging to the campus-wide community; encourages student participation in University dialogue and decision-making.
- Serves as the staff mentor for Chancellor Undergraduate Internship Program (CUIP) interns.
- Designs and produces fiscal, organizational, and leadership development programs for all advised organizations, promoting the intellectual, cultural, social development of students.
- Works in collaboration with student organization leaders to develop, produce, and evaluate programs
- Participates in discussions of leadership development theories
- Participates in regional and national student affairs organizations as directed.
15% - Financial Management
- Participates in long range planning and development and new initiatives.
- Assists in the management of budgets for advised organizations by reviewing ledgers, requesting corrections to errors and providing the advised organizations with monthly reports.
- Analyzes funding trends and spending patters and provide analysis and recommendations.
- Manages fund source allocations for Campus Sustainability Council, Student Environmental Center and The Education for Sustainable Living Program.
- As directed, provides financial management assistance to special projects, organizations, and events.
- Authorizes all financial transactions and fundraising activities, according to University policies, deadlines, fund source stipulations, insurance requirements, federal, state, and local laws; maintains accurate and current fiscal files and ledgers; advises student organizations in the use of financial planning principles.
10% - Administration
- Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success. Maintains ongoing cooperative and consultative relations with other units, including Resources Centers, Conduct, Academic Support Services, Colleges, Office of Sustainability, Environmental Health and Safety, Police, Fire, Risk Management. Serves as a campus resource in the planning and implementation of student development opportunities through committee participation as directed. Assists student liaisons in maintaining relationships with faculty and staff sponsors.
- Maintains personnel records and organizes files. Maintains a clean, usable, functional office for self and advised organizations. Directs incoming solicitations and inquiries to the appropriate body. Assists and advises the management of email list-serves. Ensures that websites are kept current and agendas/minutes are posted online from advised organizations in a timely manner.
10% - Supervision
- Supervises student staff.
- Manages hiring, supervision, evaluation and termination processes in conformance with University policies and procedures.
- When requested, conducts investigations and/or hearings, participate in the recommendation of sanctions to the organization leadership.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Strong knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
- Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Experience planning and producing large and complex events and activities.
- Experience designing, producing, and presenting student development programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of student development, mentorship, and organizational development.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the issues facing diverse students in a University setting and experience addressing these issues.
- Proven effective conflict resolution and mediation skills.
- Experience mentoring student interns and supervising student employees including administration of personnel actions.
- Budgetary and financial experience sufficient to oversee a $250,000 budget and manage a high volume of complex financial transactions.
- Demonstrated experience assimilating a broad knowledge of complex laws, policies, and procedures and applying them with consistency to varied circumstances
- Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relations with students, faculty, and staff.
- Experience employing a participatory leadership and management style.
- Ability to independently set priorities and complete multiple and competing job responsibilities.
- Proven ability to be flexible, cooperative, and collaborative within a complex and sensitive political and social environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to the use of University funds and facilities, student organizations and event presentation.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
