UC Santa Cruz CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment) is excited to announce an opportunity to join our team. We are looking for an Advocate to provide confidential and trauma-informed support to campus survivors through direct and group services.

Do you have the experience and passion for working with students, faculty, and staff on trauma and grief? Are you hoping to expand your transferable skill set and desire to work on a diverse college campus?

The Advocate will be joining a team of Advocates and Prevention Education Coordinators who serve the entire community, including students, faculty, and staff. The position is expected to work at the central campus location with some hybrid remote work arrangements possible. The CARE Advocate is a partial-year career position with a 4-week unpaid summer furlough. Positions with summer work breaks contain regularly scheduled non-work periods during which the CARE Advocate remains an employee, retains health benefits, but is not at work.

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited high-complexity clinical laboratory, and a campus pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) supports UCSC students to maintain or improve their general well-being by providing a broad range of counseling, psychiatric services, consultation, and outreach services and programs.

Additional departments include: Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment), the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; Patient Support Services; and Student Insurance Programs.

SHS employs approximately 120 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. JOB SUMMARY

CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment) is the advocacy and prevention education office at University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC).

CARE supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence, as well as their significant others and allies. CARE also promotes a sex-positive consent culture on campus through programming, training, workshops, and other outreach to students, staff, and faculty.

Under the supervision of the CARE Director, the CARE Advocate will provide crisis counseling and advocacy for campus victims/survivors of sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking by working with campus and community partners.

The CARE Advocate's scope of work will include a specialized focus on alternative healing programming and resources for survivors. A core responsibility of this position is to support survivors from various campus communities through trauma-informed and healing-centered engagement. The Advocate will primarily focus on confidential direct services which include emotional support, crisis counseling, case management, and linkage to services. The Advocate will also provide group/survivor circles that support inter-sectional healing approaches, community building, and healing outside of formal processes.

The CARE Advocate will assist CARE staff with developing and providing targeted outreach and training to the campus community and help publicize the advocacy services offered on campus and in the Santa Cruz community. The CARE Advocate can also support student interns and will assist with data collection and administrative tasks.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $6,250 - $6,667 per month for 11 months. Salary commensurate with knowledge, experience, language skills, and education

JOB DUTIES

75% - Advocacy

  • Administers confidential crisis intervention and on-going advocacy that is comprehensive, empowerment-based, and trauma-informed to those that experience sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner harm.
    Maintains a continuous caseload to provide case management services that include various supportive measures including accommodations oversight such as: academic advocacy, self-care, and safety planning.
  • Supports survivors working with various campus entities to provide campus-based advocacy services. Campus entities include Conduct, Dean of Students, UC Police Department, Human Resources, Resource Centers, and other specialized counseling services within the University.
  • Functions as liaison between survivors/victims and campus and community resources. Coordinates campus and community resources to support survivors including emergency housing, food, clothing, transportation, and assistance.
  • Provides information and supportive measures about reporting options to survivors (based on situations) and offers accompaniment as a support person as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with other Student Health Services (SHS) units including, Campus Mobile Crisis Team (CMCT), Case Managers, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Physicians and Nurse Practitioners to mutually assist students for holistic health approach.
  • Facilitates survivor circles/groups that focus on alternative healing program and resources for survivors. The Advocate will be responsible for group program activities that support inter-sectional healing and self-care.

15% - Education and Outreach

  • Actively participates in subcommittees, working groups, and task forces related to CARE, serving as the CARE representative across campus.
  • Assists with the development and delivery of workshops and training programs to educate various university populations on the services offered by CARE Advocates.
  • Develops and facilitates programming, educational workshops, and group activities with an inter-sectional lens to support survivors and their healing processes.
  • Builds and maintains good working relationships between on and off campus partners that serve those impacted by sexual assault and/or prevention related programs including Title IX, Student Conduct, Rape Crisis Center, Santa Cruz County SART (Sexual Assault Response Team), Domestic Violence Shelters, Respondent Services, UC Police Department, Santa Cruz Police Department, and other UC campuses.

10% - Administration

  • Utilizes the case management system to document notes, resources, referrals, and identifying data to support the overall flow and function of survivor-centered services at CARE.
    Maintains confidential case files so that baseline statistics and trends can be determined and reported.
  • Uses reporting data to improve advocacy efforts and outreach services.
  • Supports data collection and interpretation of impact reports that are required annually to ensure proper reflection of advocacy services provided throughout the academic year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Complete State of California Certification as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor within 6 months of hire; if applicant is not certified, unit will support training through local resources.
  • Complete State of California Domestic Violence Counselor within 6 months of hire; if the applicant is not certified, the unit will support training through local resources.
  • Ability to work with individuals who have experienced sexual assault, stalking, dating/domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, or sexual harassment
  • Ability to recognize complex cases that may require transferring to an advocate with more experience and provide effective warm transfer of cases
  • Able to effectively use professional skills, objectivity, and insight in effectively advocating for the survivor
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people of various ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation and gender identities using an intersectional approach
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and the flexible use of advocacy skills
  • Excellent skills in assessing levels of emotional distress and ability to react appropriately
  • Ability to work effectively within and outside of the university system in developing relationships and programs to address programmatic issues and needs
  • Excellent interpersonal, cultural competency, and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated effectiveness in interacting with students, staff, and faculty of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to independently prioritize and complete work under multiple, competing deadlines and frequent interruptions
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, case tracking systems, and other key programs necessary to perform the requirements of the position

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to provide crisis counseling in Spanish or another language other than English

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Complete State of California Certification as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor within 6 months of hire; if applicant is not certified, unit will support training through local resources.
  • Complete State of California Domestic Violence Counselor within 6 months of hire; if the applicant is not certified, the unit will support training through local resources.
  • Complete UCSC HIPAA (Health Information Portability and Accessibility Act) training within 30 days of hire.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
  • Maintain confidentiality within the bounds of applicable laws and regulations. Report to a qualified counselor as defined by California Evidence Code section 1035.2(a)(1).
