Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $58,600 - $69,150/yr. The full salary range for this position is $58,600 - $100,800/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: Student Resource Building - 3112A

Working Days and Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, occasional evenings and weekends required

Type of Remote or Hybrid Work Arrangement, if applicable: Hybrid Work Schedule up to one day remote will be considered after the probationary period has been completed and as long as hybrid arrangements are approved by the Division of Student Affairs. Incumbent must be available to be in the office as requested or full time should operational needs require it.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Assistant Director for Student Support & Advocacy is located in the Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity (RCSGD) at UCSB. Serves as a resource for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, questioning and ally members of the University community and helps support the mission and function of the RCSGD. The Assistant Director for Student Support & Advocacy's main role is providing extensive management to the programming, outreach, and education to the campus community, and oversight of the center, along with the Assistant Director for Programs and Leadership, and under the general supervision of the Director of LGBTQIA+ Resources. The Assistant Director for Student Support & Advocacy creates long-range planning and direction to LGBTQIA+ services as well as assesses effectiveness. Creates, leads, implements, and evaluates on-going educational and training initiatives. Leads the team of up to ten student interns in creating social, educational, and support programs. Meets with students and assists them in navigating resources as they resolve emotional, academic, interpersonal, and crisis-level issues related to their identity, perceived identity, or conflict resulting from hate or bias. Must assess campus-wide culture and implement systems to address campus climate challenges. Must represent LGBTQIA+ Resources on campus-wide committees, and act for/or in the absence of the Director. Additional duties include: supporting students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who access the space and services of the Center; assisting with student organization advisement and referral services; supervising student employees; and helping maintain the office's physical space. Will act as Director in their absence. Must display an understanding of key issues LGBTQIA+ students face including alcohol and drug abuse, emotional distress and suicidal ideation, and effects of hate crimes/incidents.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 1-3 years full-time relevant experience working in higher education, non-profit, mental health, or other related setting.
  • Experience serving as the primary supervisor of part-time staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working with queer and trans people of color communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working with trans communities.
  • Demonstrated experience providing support or resource referral to address an individual's current need.
  • Experience providing presentations or facilitating educational workshops.
  • Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Experience balancing competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related area.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and/or supporting LGBTQ students in a higher education context.
  • Experience designing curriculum for adult learners; Undergraduate, graduate, or professional work in a campus LGBTQ center.
  • Previous experience in sexual assault crisis counseling or domestic violence advocacy.
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
  • Experience navigating a large organization.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Some evening and weekend work is required
  • This position will function as a confidential liaison with the campus sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking resource department so that they can be a confidential resource for LGBTQ students. This function will require campus and state training certifications which the candidate will receive upon hire.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

30% Student Support and Advocacy

  • Serves as the primary resource to provide one-on-one support, crisis management, and appropriate referrals for students in distress.
  • Assume primary responsibility for space management of the RCSGD Lounge. Interact with and support students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who access the space and services of the Center.
  • Connect students and colleagues with campus and community resources to address food security, housing insecurity, financial insecurity, and other concerns.
  • Partner with colleagues across campus to create resources to better serve LGBTQIA+ students.
  • Serves as the RCSGD's Title IX Advocacy Liaison
  • Connect students to campus reporting options, including Title IX, Bias Incident Reporting, and the Office of Student Conduct.

25% Supervision

  • Provides leadership, direction, and supervision for up to 10 Student Assistants in the design, implementation, and evaluation of all support services.
  • Assist with student organization advisement and referral services.
  • Develop and structure student staff team, and successfully recruit, train, and supervise diverse interns and volunteers. Provide ongoing mentorship, coaching, and leadership development to student staff to develop their capacity as peer educators and maintain staff expectations and responsibilities.
  • Lead and supervise a team of up to 10 in creating social, educational, and support programs. Assists in the coordination and oversight of the department's recruitment, selection and training.

15% Management

  • In absence of Director, represents the department to the campus community, provides leadership, and offers decision making authority.
  • Creates long-range planning goals and objectives for LGBTQIA+ services and assesses and evaluates campus-wide issues and implement systems to address campus climate challenges.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for operations of the Center and program delivery. Uses independent judgment to resolve problem or crisis situations that arise.
  • Oversees development and maintenance of the library, including on-line inventory.
  • Liaise with other departments within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs and maintains on-going cooperative and consultative relations.
  • Develop and implements educational, social, and cultural programs and events for LGBTQIA+ and allied populations in the university community aimed at enhancing an understanding of diversity and fostering a campus climate that acknowledges and respects the uniqueness of all its members.
  • Develop and manage the Empowerment Coordinators programming budget and outreach to other units for financial support and co-sponsorships for events.
  • Engage in long-range planning, goal setting, policy development, budget decisions and student personnel actions.
  • Supports the functioning of the RCSGD by completing special assignments as required.
  • Facilitates the creation and maintenance of a positive, student-centered community.

20% Educational Programming

  • Provide cohesive campus and community educational programming to: decrease the incidences of hate crimes, build and provide a safer campus community for the LGBTQIA+ community, respond to the needs of the LGBTQIA+ population.
  • Research, create, deliver, and evaluate complex training workshops and programs with measurable learning outcomes specific to diverse audiences of faculty, staff, students, and community members.
  • Establishes creative, thought provoking, and collaborative educational programs addressing the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community addressing social justice issues and intersections of race, ethnicity, ability, class, religion, gender, etc.
  • Perform research and analysis, compile data, and prepare reports for LGBTQIA+ Resources and the Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity.
  • Establishes programming goals and assesses activities to determine effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
  • Facilitates LGBTQIA+ and allied student discussion groups that provide a supportive and growth-oriented space for peer support.
  • Create long-term systems of student identity development through implementing programmatic forums, services, institutes, and retreats.

10% Public Information

  • Collaborates and provides content for the development of printed materials.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of the Resource Center website.
  • Represents the Resource Center and the University to telephone callers, walk-in traffic, and at outreach events.
  • Maintains referral files and refers students, faculty and staff to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Cultivate and sustains ongoing collaborative relationships with a wide array of staff, faculty, students, community members, and with campus and community organizations in order to accomplish goals.
  • Collects and disseminates accurate information regarding LGBTQIA+ issues and resources to the campus and Santa Barbara community.
  • Analyze campus-wide policies and procedures and consult with campus partners to create policies and procedures that are inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people.
  • Represent LGBTQIA+ Resources on campus-wide committees and work groups.
