About the Department:
The units directly under the Senior International Officer (SIO) are the Global Education Office (GEO) and International Enrollment Partnerships (IEP); in addition, there is close collaboration with other international-focused units at the university such as INTO Mason, Mason Korea, and Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS). These units collectively support the internationalization efforts of the university and, in support GMU's Strategic Plan, serving both students studying abroad, as well as international students coming to Mason.
About the Position:
This position supports the Global Education Office's Global Internship Programs. Responsibilities include advising students on global internship opportunities; scheduling and presenting application workshops; processing student applications and nominating students to partner organizations; processing course registrations with the Office of the University Registrar; establishing and maintaining global partners in furtherance of the GMU's strategic plan; and maintaining internship program materials.
Responsibilities:
Program Adviser/Record Keeping
- Administrative Support
- Documentation and Record-Keeping: maintains accurate records of student placements, agreements, and program details;
- Scheduling and Coordination: assists in scheduling meetings, interviews, and events related to the internship program;
- Communication: handles routine correspondence with students, faculty, and external partners regarding program logistics; and
- Database Management: updates and manages databases and software systems used for tracking students.
- Student Support
- Student Advising: advises students on global internship opportunities, application processes, and program requirements;
- Application Processing: assists with the application process, including collecting and reviewing documents, and communicating with applicants;
- Orientation and Training: helps organize and facilitate pre-departure orientations and training sessions for students. Provides guidance on cross-cultural adaptation, professional development, and safety considerations during internships abroad;
- Troubleshooting: provides support to students during their internships, addressing any issues or concerns that arise; and
- Resource Provision: distributes materials and resources to students, such as handbooks, travel guides, and emergency contacts.
International Internships Program Recruitment
- Training: trains Global Education Office recruiting staff on internship opportunities, timelines, and requirements;
- Scheduling and Coordination: coordinates with career services and industry/academic unit internship coordinators to schedule global internship promotional events;
- Event planning: organizes informational sessions, workshops, and recruitment events to attract students and raise awareness about global internship opportunities;
- Creates and executes presentations to a variety of groups on Global Internships; and
- Marketing Support: helps develop promotional materials and strategies to increase program visibility and participation.
Program Management
- Budget Assistance: tracks program expenses and assist with budget management under the guidance of the Global Internships Manager;
- Data Collection and Reporting: collects and compiles data for program evaluation and reporting purposes;
- Support: aids the Global Internships Manager in the administration of new initiatives;
- Meeting Participation: attends meetings and takes minutes as required, providing summaries to the Global Internships Manager;
- Professional Development: participates in relevant training and professional development opportunities; and
- Feedback Collection: gathers feedback from students, faculty, and partners to inform program improvements.
Other Related Duties
- Responsible for promoting Global Internships & Study Abroad; and
- Perform other assigned duties.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in International Studies, International Affairs, Global Affairs Education, Experiential Education, Business, Economics, Politics, or Foreign Language or equivalent work experience.
- Administrative and student-centered experience (typically 1 year);
- Knowledge of different academic and work environments and culture throughout the world;
- Knowledge of the administrative principals of experiential, internship, field studies, and/or study abroad programs;
- Administrative knowledge of working in an institute of higher education;
- Student advising skills;
- Cross cultural communication skills;
- Skill in using computer databases and Excel;
- Ability to implement marketing strategies;
- Proven ability to work with people of diverse cultures; and
- Ability to communicate complex issues and perspectives to a variety of audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in related field; and
- Ability to provide excellent service to members of George Mason University's different schools and units, students, and external partners.
