Description

The Data Analytics Program at Denison University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position beginning in Fall 2025. Candidates must demonstrate potential for successful teaching at the undergraduate level and should have a strong commitment to pedagogical and curricular innovation within a liberal arts environment. We seek to hire an individual from one of the many disciplines that are representative of the applied, interdisciplinary nature of Data Analytics. Candidates' primary discipline may be in the social, natural, or quantitative sciences, arts, or the humanities. Candidates must also have formal education in data analytics methods, or active engagement in scholarship involving advanced data analytics techniques. We especially seek candidates whose scholarship and application areas complement and broaden our existing faculty expertise which currently includes: Ecology, Natural Language Processing, Global Energy Markets, Time Series Analysis, and Health Care Operations Research. The initial appointment may be at either the Assistant or Associate professor level based on the candidate's previous experience in academia.

Our program is an interdisciplinary major training students to ask and answer questions with data across a wide range of liberal arts disciplines. Our program prepares students to be creative problem-solvers by emphasizing hands-on, collaborative, and experiential modes of teaching and learning. All majoring students choose a domain area in which to develop disciplinary knowledge in addition to the core Data Analytics skills. For more information about Denison University's Data Analytics program, please visit https://denison.edu/academics/data-analytics.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach across the Data Analytics curriculum including courses that emphasize all aspects of the data analytics life cycle: research design, data collection and curation, analysis, visualization, and communication (course details can be found at https://denison.edu/academics/data-analytics/courses). We seek candidates who demonstrate potential to effectively teach novice to advanced level undergraduate courses across the Data Analytics curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to teach statistical concepts, quantitative reasoning, and data analytics using R and Python. Prior experience with at least one of these languages is required. Evidence of advanced proficiency with one or both is preferred, as is experience teaching with either or both languages. Candidates are encouraged to discuss any additional facets of their engagement with the process of coding, such as coding pedagogies, reproducibility, or working with challenging datasets in the materials they submit. The typical teaching load at Denison is 5 courses per year. Denison is a fully residential campus and all classes are held in-person and on-campus.

The Denison faculty is a community of teacher-scholars. Therefore, candidates must also be active scholars with a clearly articulated, productive research program that includes data-driven analysis and methods, which is able to accommodate undergraduate research and flourish in a liberal arts environment. During the summer, Denison and several affiliated funding agencies provide research and housing stipends for the support of undergraduate research students, including faculty stipends. Research with students during the academic year is also supported with funding available from various internal sources. A supportive environment for teacher-scholars who value both classroom and research excellence, Denison offers extensive support for its faculty, including start-up research funds, an annual professional development account, competitive professional development funding, and a one-semester research leave after a successful pre-tenure review. The college also offers a range of workshops and mentoring programs to develop our strengths as teacher-scholars. Faculty are also expected to contribute actively to the continued growth of the program; thus we seek candidates with strong collaborative, organizational and communication skills. Contributions to the life of the department, institution, and the larger community are an essential part of Denison's mission. We anticipate our new colleague will regularly engage in service activities within these communities.

Denison is a highly selective, residential liberal arts college with a broadly diverse student body of approximately 2,400 from across the nation and world. We seek faculty who exemplify academic excellence and professional integrity. Denison is committed to attracting and supporting a diverse faculty and is committed to providing a work and learning environment free from discrimination.
