The Salvation Army Position Description Springfield, IL After School Counselor - $18 per hour/20 hours per week Job Summary: Counselors will guide a group of students through the daily activity schedule. They will lead group enrichment activities, and assist with homework, tutoring, and STEAM activities. Reports To: Youth Program Director Qualifications: Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others. Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry and annual motor vehicle check with a valid driver's license. CPR/First Aid certification will be required for all and may be provided if necessary. Individual must be at least 18 years old and have specific knowledge and work experience related to child development and programming for middle school youth with preferred experience with STEAM programming. Education: Associate degree in area of education, child development, or related field or equivalent work experience with youth activity and programming. Physical Demands/ Work Environment: This position is required to have the ability to keep up with the activities of the youth that are involved. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position the individual must be able to engage in the daily activities and sports provided by the after-school program. The vision requirements include needing to be able to see the children in whatever activity may be going on. The work environment for this position includes indoor/ outdoor activities, both in and out of town with an often-loud noise level. Individual must be able to frequently lift to twenty-five pounds and occasionally up to fifty pounds. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to talk and listen, stand, walk, sit and use hands. The use of Office and Computer Equipment is necessary. Vision abilities will require close vision. Work may be performed indoors and occasionally require outdoors to attend meetings.
