Position Summary: The Mechanical Dimensional Inspector III is responsible for all aspects of quality inspection of the company's products including full understanding of CMM use to include basic programming. The position performs a wide variety of complex inspections in the production process including routine and non-routine visual, dimensional, mechanical, test and functional set-ups and inspections, has the ability to recognize trends and report on them, provides production support; data collection and analysis, troubleshooting and root cause analysis, and has the ability to train all aspects included in level III to co-workers and workplace organization and safety.

Job Duties and Responsibilities



  • Efficient/effective planning and performance of complex precision inspection for determination of product acceptability, in accordance with company standards.
  • Review inspection data to assure integrity and investigate/resolve discrepancies found during part inspection.
  • When required to lead the MRB in resolution of issues, contact of supplier (internal and external) and notification of customer (internal and external) of resolution.
  • Using the company operating system to generate inquiries, perform movement of material, create job routings, inspection sheets, and any other documents required to perform job duties.
  • Development, documentation, and implementation of expedient methods of inspection in order to maintain product flow in accordance with company directives. This includes developing fixtures, gauges and the training of lower-level inspectors in their use.
  • Correct operation-programming of advanced measurement systems from OEM (original equipment manufacturer) written instructions and/or training.
  • Using corrective action system and subsequent follow up process to resolve deficiencies found during job function.
  • Correct loading test in and operating CMM (Coordinate Measurement Machine) with established programs. This includes basic programming, verifying downloads, and communicating results, and training others as required.
  • Assuming administrative duties in the absence of supervision in order to comply with company directives.
  • Communicate effectively to supervision regarding problems and corrective action.
  • Seek and act upon ways to improve daily work processes to enhance quality and productivity and satisfy customer needs and expectations; look for cost reduction and service improvements; eliminate unnecessary or low priority work; initiate and encourage others to resolve impediments and act on improvement opportunities.
  • Regular on-site attendance/punctuality is a necessary function of this position.
  • May be required to work in other functional areas and/or facilities depending on business needs.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Education/Experience & Skills:



  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 5+ years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with surface plate layout techniques with traditional measuring devices (e.g., indicators, height gages, calipers, micrometers).
  • 5 to 7 years as level three inspector with a minimum of 1 year of experience operating GOM-Atos, 3 years CMM, 5 years Starrett HDV.
  • Drawing reading, including working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances.
  • Knowledge and experience with use of CMM. Use of Zeiss CMM systems and basic programming knowledge a plus.
  • Basic MS Word and Excel skills.
  • Rudimentary knowledge of components, assemblies, and product form, fit and function.


Working Conditions:



  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping/squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
