The starting salary for this position is $50,000

Summary/Primary Purpose: The Volunteer & Community Relations Director has an overall responsibility for the development of The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls. They will provide supervision, direction, and direct involvement in volunteer management, community relations, fundraising, and special events in support of The Salvation Army programs and services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Volunteer Management



  • Responsible for the management and oversight of all volunteers including volunteer data management in the Better Impact System.
  • Help conduct Safe From Harm Trainings for all necessary volunteers.
  • Solicit and participate in speaking engagements to promote volunteer opportunities to local service clubs and organizations, agency partners, businesses, etc.
  • Serve as the staff liaison for the Advisory Board, including onboarding new members.
  • Oversee and lead the Advisory Board Development Committee meetings and provide Development reports to the entire Advisory Board.
  • Work throughout the year to acquire and manage volunteers for the Christmas Season efforts including volunteer bellringers, Thanksgiving Day volunteers, etc.
  • Provide oversight, management and reporting for the AARP/SSCEP Program.


Community Relations



  • Represent The Salvation Army as a member of The Elks Club and any other necessary clubs, groups, organizations.
  • Update and maintain The Salvation Army Facebook and social media pages as well as the official website, providing oversight to discussions and content development.
  • Coordinate and regularly update media contacts and disperse news/press releases, working with Corps Officer and DHQ when necessary.
  • Develop and implement annual social media and public relations calendar.
  • Identify and accept public relations opportunities.


Fundraising



  • Work closely with individuals, corporations, and foundations, conducting cultivation activities and practices to help maintain good relationships, working with DHQ Development when necessary.
  • Work with Corps Officers to set and assess annual fundraising targets and benchmarks.
  • Work with appropriate program staff and Corps Officers to secure grant and foundation dollars.
  • Assist in the Christmas fundraising efforts.


Special Events



  • Plan, organize and execute fundraising events.
  • Plan, organize and execute volunteer events including an annual volunteer appreciation dinner.
  • Attendance and participation in community events when appropriate or required.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervision of volunteers, AARP/SSCEP Participants

Education and/or Experience: College degree in a related field with some job experience required.

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.



  • Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft software to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. The ability to access payroll, timekeeping, and personal data via a web-based system.
  • Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, 10-key, and attention to detail and filing.
  • Good communication skills both written and spoken, and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters.


Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Mus be approved through the Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must successfully complete The Salvation Army's Safe from Harm training.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical requirements include good speaking, hearing and vision ability and excellent manual dexterity. Ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate cleaning equipment. This position will require the ability to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds occasionally.
