Job Overview:

Under general directions from the Laboratory operations Manager, Provide leadership and direction in effectively managing daily operations of the reduced microbiology and point of care programs. Coordinate the laboratory quality assurance activities. Reports to the laboratory medical director, laboratory administrative director and operations manager. Interacts with the infection prevention department, nursing and medical staff. Effectively communicates information, utilizes resources and manages staff and services to institute industry best laboratory practices. Manages staff and operational expenses in the department. Establishes annual goals and objectives for the department in conjunction with section supervisors, Medical Directors and Laboratory Administrative Director. Ensures that the laboratory complies with all applicable policies, laws and regulations.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • B.S. Degree in clinical, biological, or clinical laboratory/medical technology science.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in health or Business Administration preferred
  • Certification (A.S.C.P. or N.C.A.) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in laboratory management.

Essential Functions:

  • Under general directions, work with Section Supervisors, Medical Director and Administrative Director to ensure departmental compliance with C.A.P., J.C.A.H.O., NJ State Dept of Health, and all other applicable laboratory governing bodies to ensure departmental accreditation.
  • Assist in developing and recruiting qualified candidates and staff. In conjunction with Human Resources and Laboratory Admin Director, coordinate departmental interviews, hires, disciplines, discharges, and take part in the supervisory evaluation.
  • Coordinates hospital Point-of Care program and the reduced Microbiology program. Evaluates new procedures, recommends quality control (QC) procedures, implements and reviews proficiency testing, reviews patient testing and QC results and implements appropriate corrective action. Maintains regulatory compliance with JCAHO, CAP, NJDOH and others.
  • Provides technical support to nurses, physicians and other users. Advises nurse educators of curriculum changes for nurse training. Prepares and administers physician and nurse competency for their credentialing. Trains Phlebotomy Coordinator in new phlebotomist-performed testing.
  • Lead the Laboratory Safety Committee and assists with overall laboratory safety and variance reporting.
  • Communication, cooperation, and assistance are given promptly in a clear, courteous manner to coworkers, hospital staff, patients, physicians and other hospital personnel.
  • Utilizes good interpersonal relations skills, including maintaining good working relations with fellow employees and maintaining good rapport with all hospital personnel.
  • Assists in developing and assures documentation of Quality Assurance / Quality Control program to comply with all regulatory standards
  • Perform monthly patient test management quality assurance tasks.
  • Conduct quarterly QA meetings
  • Follows established procedures and evaluates and solves problems related to collecting and processing specimens for analysis.
  • Maintains logs of all preventative maintenance, recalls and remedial action for each piece of equipment
  • Initiates special studies as needed.
  • Establishes Preventative Maintenance schedules and ensures that they are completed.
