Position Description

Safely performs journeyperson level tasks in the fabrication, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of fixtures, equipment, structures, buildings, and built-in components for Texas Tech facilities. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Assesses, prepares and gathers materials needed for each project,
  • Perform carpentry tasks to include: The ability to work with all grades and types of hard woods, plywood, sheetrock and water proof sheeting.
  • Perform Carpentry tasks to include: The ability to build effective support systems and be efficient in wood and metal stud framing.
  • Maintains records of materials and labor expended for each project or job assignment.
  • Attends scheduled meetings and trainings required to maintain technical skills and qualifications.
  • Must be proficient in math and able to calculate, measure and cut pieces with minimum waste. Standard: Ensure that all jobs are safely accomplished to meet established standards of performance and quality.

Required Qualifications

Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. Three years experience in designated trade or licensed journeyperson.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, principals, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to perform the more difficult or non-routine carpentry assignments.
  • Skill in constructing, altering, and repairing walls, doors, windows, furniture and cabinets according to blue prints and sketches.
  • Must have sufficient strength to lift a maximum of 60 LBS and move this load from one location to another.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to deal with customers, shop personnel and other department personnel.
  • Working knowledge of operation and safe use of all power and hand tools/equipment common to the carpenter field.
  • Five years experience as a journeyperson level Carpenter preferred. Accredited journeyperson level certified training as a Carpenter can be substituted for work experience on a year-by-year basis to meet this preference.
