Job Summary
Dr. Catherine Thorn is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral scientist to carry out preclinical and translational research investigating the mechanisms by which vagus nerve activity can enhance neuroplasticity in cortico-basal ganglia motor circuits. Lab techniques combine rodent behavioral training with modern neural recording and manipulation methods, including optogenetics, DREADDS, fiber photometry, and in vivo electrophysiology to investigate the neural substrates of motor learning in healthy subjects and during stroke recovery. Competitive applicants will have experience with one or more such techniques and a track record of productivity, including first-authored publications.
The Research Associate will be primarily responsible for planning, conducting and directing a wide variety of experiments. Responsible for the evaluation and interpretation of research data. Will conduct experiments using advanced equipment and apply complex techniques, methods and procedures; plan and execute the details of experiments according to research protocol.
This position is in the department of Neuroscience in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas ( UTD - bbs.utdallas.edu). As a member of the Department of Neuroscience and housed in the Bioengineering and Sciences Building, affiliations are possible with the Texas Biomedical Device Center, the Center for Advanced Pain Studies, The Callier Center for Communication Disorders, The Center for Vital Longevity, and The Center for Brain Health. UTD is the fastest-growing University in Texas, is ranked number 3 in the nation among universities less than 50 years old and houses a vibrant research community. The city of Dallas is an international economic hub with a vibrant atmosphere and world-class sports and entertainment in a temperate climate.

This is an NIH grant-funded position, and continued employment is contingent on the availability of funds.
Minimum Education and Experience

Ph.D in a related field.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • One or more first author papers published or accepted in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Prior experience with rodent handling and behavioral training
  • Prior experience with modern neural manipulation and/or recording techniques

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute in vivo rodent experiments, in collaboration with the PI and co-investigators
  • Maintain comprehensive records of results and laboratory protocols
  • Evaluate and interpret research data using rigorous statistical and signal processing techniques
  • Present research results in publications and at meetings, in collaboration with the PI
  • Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Creative thinking skills and a predisposition for problem solving
  • A deep understanding of the relevant neuroscience literature.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in the English language (both written and verbal)
