Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Anesthesia related duties: Provides anesthesia for patients undergoing surgical, obstetric, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures while monitoring the patient's condition and supporting vital organ functions. Responsibilities also include diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and/or cancer pain as well as provide resuscitation and medical management for patients with critical illnesses and severe injuries. An organizational related support or service (administrative or clerical) role or a role that focuses on support of daily business activities (e.g., technical, clinical, non-clinical) operating in a "hands on" environment. The majority of time is spent in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. An experienced level role that requires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and may require vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision, problems are typically of a routine nature, but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures, and communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview

This position supports the operating rooms with anesthesia and physiological monitoring equipment in preparation for anesthesia in surgical, obstetric, and diagnostic anesthesia suites. This is an integral position in a dynamic and fast paced clinical setting with involvement in various surgical procedures that include an advanced cardiac surgery program.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

3. Two (2) years of experience as an Anesthesia Technician.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Associate's degree.

2. Anesthesia Technician Certification.

3. Experience with Radiometer ABL90 blood gas devices and Hemochron Elite ACT devices.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Performs and/or assists with procedures in the clinical setting.

2. Responsible for the coordination and oversight of the anesthesia lab, coordinates staff competencies, and provide/support documentation according to CAP policies.

3. Prepares and sets up age-appropriate anesthesia equipment, monitors, and airway support.

4. Assists anesthesia staff with patient induction by connecting patient to hemodynamic monitoring.

5. Aids and anticipates needs of anesthesiologist in invasive monitor insertion and procedures such as arterial access, central venous access, fiber-optic intubation and/or difficult airway situations.

6. Sets up, maintains, and transports specialty devices used in the diverse clinical areas.

7. Trouble-shoots and addresses monitoring equipment questions.

8. Responds immediately to OR room calls that require assistance regarding supplies, IV pumps, rapid infusion pumps or other items required during the surgical procedure.

9. Inventories and stocks anesthesia supplies consistent with departmental requirements.

10. Maintains an inventory of properly functioning anesthesia equipment in designated area to track repairs.

11. Stocks the operating rooms, specialty carts, anesthesia carts, equipment rooms and remote anesthesia areas with disposable/reusable supplies used by anesthesia staff.

12. Performs the responsibilities for the Anesthesia Stat Lab (ASL) according to JACHO and College of American Pathologist (CAP) guidelines and as described in the Policy and Procedure Manual.

13. Works under the direction of the anesthesia technical consultant to ensure proper usage of ABL90 and Hemochron devices in their moderately complex tests.

14. Provides coordinator role through appropriate delegation of patient care activities and technical training and competencies to staff and new personnel of the appropriate shift, in addition to maintaining monthly and annual competencies.

15. Coordinates repairs and updates of equipment with manufacturers and representatives.

16. Responsible for preparation and planning for next day case equipment needs.

Physical Requirements:

1. Regularly lifts, reaches, carries, pushes, and pulls 40-50 lbs or more.

2. Regularly stands/sits combination of eight (8) hours or length of assignment.

3. Differentiates between objects such as size, temperature, or texture by touching with fingertips.

4. Perceives sounds such as phones ringing, beepers, alarms, and buzzers on equipment.

5. Clarity of both near and far vision.

6. Exposure to infectious disease and possible carcinogenic chemicals.

7. Exposure of blood-borne pathogens.

8. Ability to distinguish color, i.e. alarms and buzzers on equipment, and color codes on instrumentation.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Ability to speak and hear effectively and meet telephone and customer service standards.

2. Knowledge of sterile technique.

3. Ability to communicate with customers accurately, quickly, and loudly enough in the English language.

4. Ability to accurately maintain written records in addition to basic familiarity with computers and the ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

5. Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary systems and infection control.

6. Maintains sensitivity, maturity and flexibility in coping with difficult situations.

7. Ability to work with staff of all levels.

8. Ability to operate and troubleshoot all anesthesia equipment used in the department.
