What you'll do

As a Senior Manager for the Docusign AI Applied Science team, you are responsible for leading a core team of applied scientists and setting the standards of technical excellence in Applied Science and Machine Learning. You will be leading the efforts on building the core AI/ML capabilities and models powering our new Intelligent Agreement Management (IAM) platform.

You will manage and mentor the Applied Scientists on the team and leverage state of the art machine learning techniques for natural language processing to improve how agreements are drafted, summarized, signed, managed, and queried. The ideal candidate should have experience with all aspects of designing, building, tuning, and evaluating machine learning solutions (including LLMs). Collaborating closely with product and platform partners, you will play a leading role in delivering AI solutions for agreement understanding, information extraction, semantic search, question answering, among others.

You will leverage your expertise in AI and machine learning to advance our AI strategy and influence the executive leadership. You will bring your technical flair and team building chops together and grow a world class ML team to deliver industry-leading AI experiences to customers across DocuSign Agreement Platform.

This position is a people manager role reporting to Director, Machine Learning.

Responsibility

  • Lead and grow a world class applied science team and act as a magnet for hiring and developing great talent
  • Be a role model and advance our team culture
  • Lean in leadership to deliver success against our goals
  • Lead your Applied Science team in model development, research, testing and evaluation of existing and emerging NLP/ ML/ DL methods and models (incl. open source and licensed LLMs) that could be effectively applied to the contract domain and unlock new and innovative use cases for our customers
  • Responsible for multiple initiatives, lead cross-team collaboration, plan and guide the effort of applied scientists and ML engineers on the initiatives, and shape the technical roadmap
  • Work closely with Product Management to translate user scenarios and product requirements into robust, customer-agnostic machine learning solutions, participate in design and planning discussions to make sure we can deliver high quality AI/ML features on time
  • Be knowledgeable in and be able to build the strategy for employing the state of the art technologies to NLP tasks such as long document text understanding, entity extractions, text encoders, LLM finetuning, semantic search, question answering, query intent detection, document layout understanding, and so on
  • Provide coaching and leadership in applied science for best practices, modeling and evaluation techniques, responsible AI, model interpretability and datasets enhancements
  • Deliver AI products that delight customers while managing the health of the code base through continuous refactoring and management of technical debt

Job Designation

Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required. (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation)

What you bring

Basic

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in designing, modeling, evaluating, deploying and monitoring machine learning and deep learning solutions
  • 2+ years of people management experience leading Applied Scientists / ML Engineers
  • 6+ years experience with deep neural networks and building NLP / NLU solutions
  • Hands-on experience working with the latest NLP models like BERT, SentenceBert and LLMs like GPT, Gemini, Llama families of models, etc.
  • Experience programming in Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, spaCy, scikit-learn, or equivalent machine learning frameworks

Preferred

  • Demonstrated track record leading geographically dispersed teams
  • Familiarity with RAG and LLM agentic approaches.
  • Experience in Computer Vision techniques, especially in document layout analysis, OCR, and familiarity with vision transformer based models
  • Experience in multilingual LLM pretraining or fine-tuning
  • Strong desire to stay ahead of industry trends and technologies with a commitment to continuous learning

Wage Transparency

Pay for this position is based on a number of factors including geographic location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Based on applicable legislation, the below details pay ranges in the following locations:

California: $195,500.00 - $315,775.00 base salary

Washington and New York (including NYC metro area): $186,200.00 - $276,125.00 base salary

This role is also eligible for bonus, equity and benefits.
