Overview

The Assistant Family Advocacy Attorney is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to families and staff at Nationwide Children's Hospital. The Assistant Family Advocacy Attorney will serve NCH with legal representation for Medical Legal Partenership (MLP) referred children and families and serve as consultant and advocate for families and staff consistent with the mission, values, and strategic objectives of the organization. The Assistant Family Advocacy Attorney will not serve as direct legal counsel for Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Full time, Salaried, benefits-eligible;

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm; hybrid

Responsibilities

    Interviews and advises/counsels NCH's patients/families, advocates on behalf of patients/families, represents patients/families in adminstrative hearings and in educational settings, and assists patients/families with relevant referrals and agency applications.
  • Consults with NCH physicians and front line clincians regarding legal issues related to NCH patients/families.
  • Acts as liaison between NCH patients/families and referral agencies.
  • Participates in internal and external committees and meetings as deemed appropriate such as monthly MLP advisory board meetings and quarterly MLP leadership meetings facilitated by NCH Program Manager.
  • Lead a pro bono network managed by the NCH MLP in conjunction with community partners; this program would assist attorneys with skill-building while assisting the NCH MLP with providing legal services to patients and their families.
  • Visit NCH referring clinics on a rotating schedule in order to build rapport, assist with screening clients, and answering legal questions from physicians/front line clinicians.
  • Host office hours that will be open to NCH employees; these office hours will be designed to answer any general legal questions from physicians/front line clinicians regarding their patients/families.
  • Discuss and provide feedback to NCH patients/families who may visit during offices hours from MLP referring clinics regardless of intake status.
  • Host information clinics for NCH staff in conjunction with the NCH MLP Program Manager in order to provide education, solicit feedback from physicians/front line clinicians regarding program issues/concerns, and build rapport among the MLP program and referring physicians/front line clinicians.
  • Develops relationships with relevant community organizations and partners in order to support patients/families and assist in navigating community resources.
  • Maintains appropriate records and participates in data collection relevant to legal tasks, duties, and program outcome metrics.
  • Completes, on a timely basis, projects as assigned by NCH MLP.
  • Works closely with and takes direction from the MLP Program Manager.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Education:

  • Juris Doctorate and licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio

Experience:

  • Five years experience as an attorney.
  • Demonstrates the ability to collaborate across a multidisciplinary system.
  • Demonstrates awareness of diversity issues and provides culturally sensitive services to clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers, and to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage confidential information in a complex hospital environment.

  • Sitting Constantly (67 - 100%)
  • Talking on the phone and in person frequently (34 - 66%)
  • Typing on a word processor occasionally (0 - 33%)
  • Walking/Standing Occasionally (0 - 33%)
