Overview

Full-time, 40 hours per week

The Chief Perfusionist is responsible for the direction, coordination, management and operational/capital budget planning of the cardiovascular perfusion, and open-heart programs; supervises the application and development of perfusion technology techniques in the operating room and throughout the institution; provides quality patient care for pediatric patients through select adult patients. Manages the Heart Center's surgical & interventional cardiology databases. This includes but not limited to: audits, query requests, proper function, upgrades/updates & data harvests. Responsible for ECMO/MCS department of two (2) Coordinators and 20+ ECMO Specialists.

Responsibilities

    Coordinate the financial structure of the open-heart program including capital budget, operating budget, and revenue projection.
  1. Assist with the set-up of the patient charge structure, with Clinical Finance Department, taking into consideration equipment, manpower and disposable costs.
  2. Assist in developing and securing of an annual capital and operating budget.
  3. Initiate and authorize the expenditure of funds within the cardiovascular perfusion department.
  4. Design, recommend and provide input into the development of policies and procedures affecting areas of responsibility (i.e. protocols for patient care, operating room laboratory, etc.)
  5. Assist in design & coordination of the cardiovascular perfusion quality assurance program.
  6. Assist in design & coordination of the quality assurance program for the operating room laboratory.
  7. Interview, hire, train, coach, schedule, and discipline (when necessary) subordinate employees.
  8. Maintain a staffing plan and schedule that meets patient care/unit needs.
  9. Supervise and assign the work of subordinates.
  10. Conduct formal probationary and annual performance appraisal for subordinate employees.
  11. Develop goals and objectives for the cardiovascular perfusion and open-heart programs.
  12. Manages, audits, query, update/upgrade & data harvest of cardiac database.
  13. Maintain the video and physiologic monitoring systems for the open-heart program.
  14. Participate in continuing educational programs and research in conjunction with NCH physicians and schools of Perfusion Technology.
  15. Participate in continuing educational programs with NCH physicians and other perfusionists in an effort to advance Medical and Perfusion technology.
  16. Assist & participate in research and advanced technique opportunities in Perfusion Technology to improve knowledge base and improve quality patient care.
  17. Operates cardiopulmonary bypass, ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pump, left heart bypass, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenator system, Perioperative Blood Management equipment & techniques, etc., within the parameters established in the policy and procedure manual and as ordered by the physicians.
  18. Responsible for all aspects of perioperative blood component management including, but not limited to, intraoperative autologous blood recovery and reinfusion and acute normovolemic hemodilution.
  19. Administration of medications, anesthetic agents and blood products under the orders and supervision of a physician.
  20. Set up, calibrates and frequently checks the physiologic monitoring apparatus plus draws blood samples for laboratory tests from an indwelling catheter.
  21. Operates, maintains and calibrates all of the operating laboratory equipment under the Main Laboratory College of American Pathology license.
  22. Performs chemistry, blood gas, activated clotting time and heparin concentration in the operating room for patients undergoing surgery or patient care.
  23. Provides any services as designated under the American Society of Extra-Corporeal Technology scope of practice and desired by the institution.
  24. Shall equitably share call and clinical responsibilities with other perfusionists on staff and is able to respond to emergencies within approximately 30 minutes of acknowledging the alert when outside of the hospital setting.
  25. Manage/mentor ECMO/MCS Coordinators.
  26. Represent Nationwide Children's Hospital at national societies.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree required (Master's degree highly desirable) in an allied health field or equivalent with a strong science background and advanced training in perfusion technology from a CAHEP accredited perfusion training program.
  • Previous pediatric perfusion experience highly preferred.
  • Must be presently certified in good standing by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Cardiovascular Perfusionist.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and techniques of Perfusion Technology.
  • Proficiency in complex professional and leadership skills usually acquired through 2-3 years of clinical experience related to program specialty.
  • Requires independent judgment to develop, implement and monitor perfusion practices in order to ensure quality care and cost effective service.
  • Interpersonal communication skills necessary to work with hospital employees, physicians, patients, family members and community professionals.
  • Must possess exceptional critical thinking skills and deal with extreme pressure and stress.
  • Ability to rotate shifts and/or work flexible hours to meet patient care needs.
  • 5+ years of experience ECMO/MCS
  • 5+ years of experience with Ventricular Assist Device (VAD).

  • Must be in good physical condition and mental health.
  • Must be able to push heavy equipment on wheels (<500lbs) and move large boxes (<100lbs) of disposable supplies.
  • Must be able to handle high levels of stress in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to problem-solving situations while maintaining excellent interpersonal communication.
  • Provides services in a setting where there is potential for exposure to blood and other high-risk body fluids, communicable disease and hazardous materials, chemicals and waste.
  • There is potential for personal injury from equipment or instruments.
