The City of West Allis is currently recruiting for the position of Arborist in the Forestry Division of the Department of Public Works. The primary duties include light to heavy manual labor on a wide variety of tree maintenance activities utilizing hand and power tools at ground level and aloft using rope and saddle and aerial lift trucks. This position also plants, maintains and removes trees, shrubs, flowers and turf on all City green spaces. The ideal candidate for this position is a positive individual who is comfortable utilizing technology, is highly adaptable and responsive to the changing priorities of the department and City, has the ability to interact with a wide variety of people including City employees and the public, and possesses the ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with challenging situations and people.

Prune: Properly evaluate tree health of each tree prior to pruning. Safely and efficiently prune young to mature trees with aerial lifts, rope & saddle, chain saws and pole saws/hand tools.
Removal: Assumes responsibility for safety of staff and citizens. Safely and efficiently remove mature trees in close proximity to traffic, pedestrians, parked cars, structures, utilities. Utilizes ropes, pulleys, and slings often used to lower large limbs/logs.
Stumping: Understand utility locate markings, Set up safety shields to protect area. Grind stump with large stump grinder.
Planting: Properly, safely, and efficiently plant bare root and balled & burlapped trees and shrubs.
Landscape maintenance: Prune trees and shrubs, plant, divide/or cut back perennials, edging of planting beds, spring & fall cleanup of leaves and plants, fertilize, mulch, weed, apply herbicides.
Snow/Ice Removal: Plow/salt City buildings & municipal parking lots, City walks and streets. Operate a variety of equipment/trucks (1ton and tandem axle trucks/w spreader/plows, loaders, skid loader, articulated tractors.

High School diploma or equivalent
Up to two years of experience as an arborist, or other tree care experience
WI driver's license
Ability to obtain WI Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire
Acceptable driving record per City policy - see application for details
Ability to obtain pesticide category 3 license within 1 year of hire
