Waukesha County's Department of Public Works - Engineering Division is seeking 2 hard-working Engineering students to aid the Engineering Staff in the design, construction, and operation of Waukesha County's Highway System during the summer months. Our Internship experience at Waukesha County provides a great opportunity for exposure to many different aspects of Civil Engineering. You will gain broad experience and insight into the profession that will help guide your future educational and professional decision-making. Waukesha County's intern experience is unique based on our practical approach to using civil engineering knowledge in the public sector environment to provide quality infrastructure and services that meet or exceed the needs of our customers and improve the Waukesha County Experience. We empower our interns and provide an opportunity to take advantage of responsibility to build experience, confidence, and accountability. In addition to technical experience and growth, you will be given the opportunity to work in a team environment and exercise leadership through training and guiding student peers. Multi-year interns have expressed appreciation for the leadership opportunities they were given working at Waukesha County.
The 2025 Summer will be exciting and challenging as Waukesha County DPW Engineering looks to deliver multiple highway and bridge construction projects including:
- CTH O (Moorland Road) reconstruction
- CTH YY (Pilgrim Road) bridge replacement
- CTH VV bridge deck replacement
- CTH EF bridge rehabilitation
- CTH TJ (Silvernail Road) reconstruction
- Countywide Asphalt Paving Program
- CTH T culvert rehabilitation
Term: May 2025 through August 2025 Schedule: full-time, M-F, 8 am to 4:30 pm, with a half hour lunch break. Additional overtime hours may be available to monitor the County's paving program.
Hourly Rate Range: $11.98 - $21.22 depending on qualifications.
The ideal candidate is someone who is self-motivated, dependable/reliable, detail oriented, and has the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
Ability to commute to Waukesha County Administration Center, 515 W. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, WI

Example of Duties

The Intern's tasks are diverse, depending on current projects. On any given day you could be working on the following types of activities:
- Roadway Design
- CAD Drafting/Civil 3D
- Roadway Plan Production
- Construction Estimating
- Design Field Surveying and Staking
- Topographic and Boundary Surveys
- Appraisal and Construction Staking
- Traffic Analysis and Reports
- Traffic Data Collection
- Construction Inspection and Record Keeping
- Bridge Construction Inspection and Record Keeping
- Asphalt Paving Program Construction Administration and Inspection
- Bridge and Culvert Inspections and Inventory
- Highway and Park System Asset Management Inventory
- Working with the Public and Waukesha County Customers
- Other tasks as assigned by the Engineering Staff

Minimum Qualifications
-
Candidates must be enrolled in a post-high school Civil Engineering program, or closely related field, and possess the following:
- Proven oral and written communication skills;
- Accuracy and attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
- Ability to expand and improve problem solving skills;
- Competent in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.);
- Reliable and dependable;
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other staff;
Preferred:
- Experience with, or knowledge of, design and visualizations software such as AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS and robotic surveying equipment.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
