Job Summary: Assist in facilitating and implementing programs/activities to members ages 14-21. The Bike Shop Assistant is responsible for assisting with entry-level mechanical training for youth, conducting bicycle repairs to maintain a consistent inventory of refurbished bikes, assisting with or conducting community repairs at events, and other bike shop tasks as required. Responsibilities: * Assists in training youth for job employment opportunities with an education focus on bicycle repair, workplace habits, and bicycle safety. * Assists with the operations of the Community Bike Shop and Mobile Repair Trailer, which are repaired by trained youth workers and available free, or low cost to the community. * Perform quality/safety control checks on bikes built by youth and ensure the safety of all bicycles. * Assist with the repair of bike donations on site and at community events. (Output target of 3 completed bikes per week) * Maintain a safe, neat, and organized workspace. * Assist with the deployment of the mobile bike shop trailer * Assists Program Manager & Coordinators with chaperoning members on field trips and outings for our members. * Picks up or delivers bike donations. * Assist with maintaining bike storage facility and accurate inventory. Education Requirements: * Must be at least 14 years old and currently in High School * BGC B!ke Mechanic Certificate * Must be a Boys & Girls Club Member enrolled into Brighter Futures. Experience Requirements: * Completion of the 6-month BGC B!ke Program Skills: * Enjoys working with youth and adults * Repair skills, Critical Thinking, Active Listening, Troubleshooting and Manual Dexterity. * Use of bicycle repair tools and shop equipment. * Patience and a positive attitude towards offering repair help to a variety of members, staff, and customers. Bicycle Mechanic Skills Skilled in diagnosing and fixing all types of repair issues on many types of bicycles including, but not limited to: * Bottom bracket install and overhauls * Brake install and adjustment including mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes * Cassette and freewheel install * Derailleur install and adjustment * Suspension fork tuning and overhaul * Hub overhauls and wheel repair/truing Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
