Job Summary

Seeking hardworking, motivated, flexible individuals to lead science-based programs to school groups and the general public utilizing the planetariums.

As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority. As a result, all offers of employment are contingent on the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (currently one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine) to pass the pre-employment requirements. Individuals with medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs that prevent them from getting the vaccine may request an accommodation from the vaccine requirement.

Position Summary

  • Present educational programs and activities for schools and other groups.
  • Plan, implement and lead space-science classes to the general public.
  • Participate in special events hosted by Outdoor Education.
  • Maintain program materials in good order.
  • Complete necessary paperwork such as attendance reports.
  • Work directly with the Head Naturalist.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of MPS Recreation rules, policies, programs and procedures related to specific locations.
Supervision Required

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of Outdoor Education.

Job Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of astronomy.
  • Ability to use PowerPoint presentations.
Preferred Experience

  • Previous work with children and adults.
  • College course work and practical experience in astronomy and space science desired.
  • Previous work or volunteer experience in natural resources.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to work with limited supervision and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of students and teachers.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and respond to immediate needs of participants/emergency situations.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and days.
  • Willingness to work varied hours, including evenings.
  • Must possess excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Must display a positive attitude and effectively communicate with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
  • Strong knowledge and commitment to the goals of environmental education.
Working Environment

This work environment includes some lifting, use of ladders, lifting and bending, working in low-light conditions, operating a computer and projector and standing for extended periods of time.
