Department/Office Mission:
The mission of the
Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and strive to provide service, leadership, and transitional student support for
UNCG. The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing, and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRiO Programs,
UNCG Guarantee,
GEAR UP
UNCG, and the Multiliteracy Centers (Speaking Center, Writing Center, and Math Help Center).
Job Description-Reporting:
The Graduate Assistant for Student Success is intended to be a two-year assistantship and reports directly to the Associate Vice Provost for Retention & Student Success.
Job Description-Job Duties and/or Responsibilities:
Spartans Thrive is a university-wide, holistic health and wellness initiative for students enrolling for the first time in college (
FTIC). Spartans Thrive is the
University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) which is a component of the reaffirmation process that reflects and affirms the commitment of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College (
SACSCOC) to enhancing the quality of higher education in the region and to focusing attention on student learning.
The
QEP Graduate Assistants will support the implementation of
Spartans Thrive through completing research and writing projects, supporting assessment and data analysis efforts, assisting in the coordination of committee meetings and events, and handling other administrative and partnership efforts. General responsibilities will also include creating marketing and outreach materials, helping lead the student engagement aspect of the project, assisting with website content development, and participating in meetings and committees as a member of the
QEP staff team.
Main
QEP efforts include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinating a mentoring program that involves recruiting, training, and matching mentors with mentees. Collaborating with mentors and mentees to facilitate mentor-mentee meetings and provide guidance on building relationships, meaningful engagement, and effective communication. Managing flags, referring students to campus-based resources, and troubleshooting the program.
- Planning and implementing co-curricular programs and events in all eight wellness dimensions. Communicating important information with students and campus partners to encourage engagement, share resources, and address any concerns that arise within the program.
- Developing curriculum module for an undergraduate general education course to integrate health and wellness topics into their course content, assignments, and discussions; and assisting in the training for course instructors and the professional development of undergraduate Peer Academic Leaders (PALS).
Work Hours, Environment: The
UNCG Graduate Assistant Work Schedule is the basis for determining the work schedule. Graduate Assistants typically work 20 hours/week, during office hours, which are generally Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. but can include evening hours for student programming. The supervisor will work with the graduate assistant to accommodate their academic course schedule. Vacation and travel requests during the academic year should be discussed prior to finalizing plans (example: booking a flight, etc.).
Required Skills or Prerequisites:
This position includes student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:
- A desire to understand and address the diverse needs of undergraduate students as they relate to holistic health and wellness, academic support, and student success
- A genuine interest in and commitment to supporting students
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate flexibility
- Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, willingness to seek consultation with supervisor and campus partners, and openness to receiving constructive feedback
- Demonstrated ability to build professional rapport, particularly with students from diverse backgrounds
- Strong ability to discuss difficult or sensitive topics while maintaining rapport and trust with students
- The ability to work with a diverse student population, a willingness to seek understanding, and a drive to strengthen multi-cultural competence as it relates to working with a diverse body of undergraduate students
- Effective time management skills & self-initiative
- Excellent communication skills, particularly small group presentations with students, staff and faculty; that convey professionalism and respect in both written and oral forms
- A general proficiency with various social media platforms, presentation software; and Microsoft excel; and/or the ability to learn and adapt to new technology platforms quickly
Stipend: $15,000 for the academic year
The stipend amount and hours per week allotted for this position are contingent on budget continuity for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which is subject to change based on
UNC System guidelines. If summer assistantship work is agreed, an additional stipend will be provided.
