Position Summary
The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Coordinator of First Year Experience, this position works primarily with the Peer Academic Leader ( PAL) program, FYE 101: Succeed at the G (new student transition seminar course) program, and Alpha Lambda Delta. FYE 101: Succeed at the G program is designed to help new students transition successfully to academic and student life at UNC Greensboro, as part of the Minerva's Academic Curriculum ( MAC). In support of FYE 101, this position will focus on developing a large team of student leaders (PALs) to provide peer mentorship to new students, in addition to engaging in program and curriculum development, teaching, marketing, and assessment. This position will also serve as a co-advisor for the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Success. Additionally, this position supports the First Year Experience team through other initiatives related to orientation, transition, and retention.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):
Peer Academic Leaders:

  • Assist with the PAL recruitment and selection processes, including marketing of the PAL program
  • Facilitate bi-weekly small group sessions with the PALs to provide guidance and support
  • Assist with the ongoing support and training of the PALs, including support for FYE 201: Lead at the G training course
  • Analyze and respond to PAL bi-weekly reports to address isolated incidents, trends, and student concerns


FYE 101: Succeed at the G Program:

  • Co-teach FYE 101 during the fall of their first year, with the option to co-teach in the spring
  • Provide support to the Director and FYE Team with various FYE 101 program administration
  • Assist with the assessment of the FYE 101 and PAL programs, and create final reports
  • Lead special research projects pertaining to the programs and services offered by the FYE team

Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society:

  • Assist in advising the executive board with regular operations such as meetings, event planning, and professional development, including the recruitment, selection, and transition of new e-board members
  • Assist with the ALD new member recruitment, marketing, and induction processes
  • Assist with the ALD scholarship review process

Additional New Student Transitions & First Year Experience Initiatives:


  • NST & FYE staff provide support for departmental programs and services, regardless of the specific functions of each job
  • Assist with all NST & FYE major events, such as 1GNITE, NAV1GATE, SOAR, Storm the Streets, and First Finals Fest; includes day-of assistance
  • Represent the department at a number of University events, including Showcase, Destination, etc.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Starting in August 2024, 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters for a remuneration of a $15,000 stipend, with the opportunity to continue work over the summer and winter break for additional compensation.
  • During their second year, Graduate Assistants have the opportunity, and are strongly encouraged, to apply and become an FYE instructor for the fall and spring semesters. This potential role requires a separate contract due to additional responsibilities, and includes remuneration of a $2,400 stipend per semester of teaching.
  • Professional development funds may be available in support of departmental needs.
  • Graduate assistants are entitled to student holidays. However, due to the nature of orientation/transition programs often occurring during breaks, Graduate Assistants will be required at times to return early or leave late for such breaks. Individual accommodations may be made for each break with the direct supervisor. Graduate Assistants do not accrue vacation time. Extensive evening and weekend hours are to be expected. Individual accommodations for alternative schedules, flex time and/or time off will be negotiated with the direct supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications

  • Quality written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Preference is given to the SAAHE program.
  • A background in education, program planning, communications, and assessment is preferred.
