Job Description

Albany Engineered Composites (AEC) is one of the most technically advanced designers and manufacturers of lightweight composite aerospace structures, subassemblies and components. Primary Description:

The NDI Supervisor is a working leader who accomplishes tasks mainly through direct supervision of non-exempt employees and daily operations of the work area. This position is expected to provide 80% of the work day performing NDI on product, and being a part of the success of the NDI team. Assignments are largely established in accordance with schedules and deliverables. Work is reviewed for accuracy and completeness. Impact decisions have a direct impact on work unit operations. Interacts daily with subordinates and/or peers within similar and/or related functions primarily for the purpose of presenting and exchanging information.

Performs non-destructive tests (NDT) on materials, manufactured items, or components using automated and manual methods and techniques including ultrasound. Requires certifications in non-destructive testing in accordance with regulations. Leads fellow NDT Technicians in everyday tasks, training, certifications, processing needs and determines priorities based on company needs.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Oversee the daily activities within the NDI team
  • Accomplishes tasks mainly through direct supervision of non-exempt and entry-level exempt employees.
  • Motivate and energize team members to ensure that everyone is focused and are all driving toward the same objectives in a positive atmosphere
  • Develop a sense of drive and urgency with your team at all times regardless of workload
  • Communicate clearly to management, NDT Level III's, and team regarding abilities and constraints to accomplish objectives
  • Identify training needs to facilitate team member growth and increased capacity/capability of team members
  • Develop a culture of quality and excellence through effective employee engagement
  • Develop visual indicators and metrics to demonstrate "Team Performance" within the NDI processes
  • Review Production Control part requests and help team with urgent part processing.
  • Help teams reach the department daily goal.
  • Develop NDI personnel.
  • Identify and flag procedural change needs.
  • Continuously improve NDI processes and techniques.
  • Full knowledge of the job. Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job.
  • General supervision and instructions given for routine work and detailed instructions given for new activities or special assignments.
  • Contacts are typically with individuals within own department and occasionally with contacts outside own organization. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data requiring some explanation or interpretation.
  • Knowledge to set up and standardize equipment, conducts tests, per written and verbal instructions as required. Thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method in which they are certified. Familiar with codes, standards and other contractual documents that control the method. Knowledge of product manufacturing and inspection technology. Assist in the design special test fixtures and test setups.

Experience/Education/Skills



    • High School diploma or recognized equivalent.
    • 2+ years of leading a team or supervising direct reports
    • Must have current certification as a Level II per NAS410 in UT.
    • Must be able to maintain a company administered UT Level II test and maintain a certification. College Science courses or equivalent education background a plus (need not have a degree).
    • Computer and technical writing skills (i.e.: MS Word, Excel, MS Paint, or equivalent)


      • Educational background similar to technical writing is preferred


    • Must possess excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills and be able to
      maintain good will in a potentially adversarial role.
    • Requires some understanding of electronics, test equipment, mechanical test methods and materials characteristics.
    • An understanding of composite manufacturing/product optional, but preferred.
