Mission Contribution:

The Director of Excel Center is responsible to provide a hands-on approach in directing, planning, managing, and coordinating the educational goals and vision of the adult high school initiatives to fulfill the GIV mission to eliminate poverty. The Director of Excel Center will drive SMILE values in daily work and team member support. The Goodwill Excel Center is a unique, free adult high school that provides a high school diploma to adult learners. This position provides a hands-on approach to leadership in directing, planning, managing, and coordinating the educational goals and vision of the school.

Summary:

The Director meets desired outcomes in the areas of operations, curriculum, personnel management, and development, in accordance with the principles of The Excel Center.Accountability is measured both internally and externally by state and local standards.The Director supervises and manages faculty and staff, creates and maintains a safe and secure educational environment for staff/students, and manages the fiscal activities of the school.The position works with the leadership of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys in establishing school goals.The Director is heavily involved with strategic planning within a fast-paced, high-change environment.

Essential Functions:

Accountability Performance:



  • Works directly with the Director of Community Impact to develop and implement school-wide goals around graduation outcomes, enrollment needs, student achievement, retention, etc.
  • Develops graduation and school accountability goals for school success. Strategizes and makes adjustments to ensure goals are met.
  • Establishes internal and external partnerships to enhance student achievement and post-secondary outcomes.
  • Ensures a high rate of graduates receiving dual credits and/or approved certifications.
  • Reviews graduate data to make adjustments to the college and career programming of the school.
  • Tracks school and student data to drive goals for improvement. Develops interventions and professional development in support of improvement goals.
  • Sets and maintains a high-performance culture for staff and students.
  • Developing an efficient system for student and program appraisal.


Budgeting and Compliance


  • Monitors monthly budgets to drive conclusions about students, staffing, and the building. Forecasts future needs and expenses to manage monthly and yearly budgets.
  • Ensures all state and central office reporting requirements are completed in a timely manner.
  • Follows GIV & Excel Center procedures and requirements for various school functions.
  • Maintains compliance with all legal, regulatory, and authorizer obligations of a school leader and special populations to ensure all students are being served.
  • Participates (or assigns designee) in SBRT and/or Individualized Education Plan Meetings and ensures that all district policies and state and federal laws are followed for identification and services.
  • Certification:
    • Assuring that teachers are assigned to areas in which they are endorsed or that teachers are making required progress toward this endorsement in accordance with Board policy.

  • Coordinating the use of subject matter specialists, resource teachers, and other resource personnel.
  • Maintaining furniture and equipment inventories.
  • Ordering necessary instructional materials, textbooks, and equipment and analyzing the usage of such materials.


Student Recruitment, Enrollment, and Retention


  • Proactively manages student recruitment/outreach opportunities to meet enrollment goals.
  • Manages the student orientation process to maximize the number of enrolling students.
  • Strategizes and makes adjustments to ensure retention of students every term.
  • Provides support for developing the student master schedule.


Staffing, Evaluation, and Development


  • Builds an effective Excel Center team by promoting job opportunities, establishing a prospect network, interviewing applicants, and selecting qualified candidates for position openings.
  • Utilizes staff evaluation and staff input to identify strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Implements professional development, training, goal setting, and succession plans for all staff throughout the school year.
    • Staff Training:
      • Working with staff in developing professional growth plans and providing opportunity for participation.
      • Participating in required training and developing a personal professional development plan.




Minimum Qualifications:


  • Degree and Credential Requirements - Bachelor's degree in psychology, human relations, social work, rehabilitation counseling, education, or related fields.
  • Applicants must hold (or be eligible for) a Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement in Administration/Supervision.
  • Previous administrative experience, during which dynamic instructional and administrative leadership has been demonstrated and can be attested to by the division superintendent for whom the applicant has worked.


Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Experience:


  • Industry Standards - Displays a working knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Background Screening - All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check.


Special Requirements:


  • Proven Leadership - Leads, develops, and gets results for a team, department, and organization through qualities of integrity, accountability, empathy, humility, resilience, vision, influence, and positivity, ideally in a school leadership role managing professionals.
  • Communication Skills - Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend others' needs. Delivers information in person, in writing, and in a digital world.
  • Organizational Aptitude - Plans and attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing multiple tasks in an organized and timely fashion. Exhibits careful attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Technical Knowledge - Has working knowledge of G Suite and MS Office, as well as student information systems. Experience with Synergy software preferred.
  • Informed Decision-Making - Identifies and comprehends issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions; uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions; takes action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.
  • Information Monitoring/Reporting/Design - Creates, collects, reviews, and maintains information to manage or improve the achievement of learning
  • Adaptability - Maintains effectiveness when experiencing shifts in priorities; adjusts effectively while maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Must provide cell phone for specified work responsibilities including the use of a phone-based application for authentication.


Physical Requirements:


  • Daily liaison activity throughout the school building and grounds as necessary. Occasional attendance to school related activities throughout the state is necessary. Daily contact is made with students, teachers, and school administrators. Regular contact is made with parents and the community. These contacts may be non-cooperative. Occasional contact with School Board members and state administrators is necessary. Regular contact is made with the school division staff. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
  • Senior school administrative work typically performed in a school setting to include classrooms, and recreational areas. Visits to off-site school and city locations are required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time throughout the work shift.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and / or move 10-25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not normally exposed to weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typically low to moderate.
