We are looking for an experienced and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Mechanical Designer within our Manufacturing Facility located in La Porte, TX. Essential Job Duties:
- Maintain protection of the environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products, as the highest priority.
- Support multiple OXY facilities with all aspects of piping design needs. Coordinate the development of design output documentation to support minor facility modifications following plant approved specifications and industry codes and practices.
- Support multiple OXY facilities with any minor structural or civil design needs. The minor structural or civil designs will support any piping designs and will follow plant approved specifications.
- Develop complete design and construction work packages that meet safety in design requirements and engineering standards. Work packages may include but are not limited to P&IDs, fabrication / isometric drawings, weld maps, process flow diagrams, bill of materials, material takeoffs, plot plans, minor structural support designs, minor foundation drawings, line lists, tie-point lists, demolition plans, elevation and isometric sketches for drawings, tank & vessel outlines, fabrication and installation instructions, photos, specifications, and as-built drawings.
- Create accurate drawings of existing equipment and routing of pipe using field measurements of piping and equipment, 3D scans, drawings, and photos.
- Create Navisworks 3D models and drawings of piping and structural systems.
- Review and support plant piping specifications, structural support specifications, maintenance procedures, and guidelines for plant specific mechanical designs.
- Utilize expertise of piping construction and industry codes and practices to perform pipe design and drawing development.
- Assist the capital projects team by preparing estimates of manhours required for design packages. For any changes to the design estimation, provide updates to the estimate to the project team.
- Perform any field measurements to support the design packages. Field measurements will be required prior to generating drawings. A field review of the dimensions is also required once the drawings are generated and prior to submitting drawings to the project team for review. Dimensional checks generally will be required once fabrication is complete and prior to installation as well as post implementation for generating As-Built drawings.
- Provide dimensional QA/QC inspections and design support by occasional travel to shop fabrication sites and other OXY site(s).
- Provide resolution of field review discrepancies with on-site/off-site vendors and managers.
- Perform QA/QC audits of design packages by cross-checking other internal or external design packages.
- Coordinate drawing management activities using the OXY drawing management portal/program Adept. Assist by searching for drawings, checking out any drawings, and adding new or modifying existing drawings in the database. Provide support to outside engineering firms by exporting or importing relevant drawings. Reconcile any CAD drawing files into the drawing management portal. Add new drawings to Adept both electronically and manually through a scanner/plotter. Become an expert in the Adept drawing management program and provide training to others as needed.
- Manage and issue new drawing numbers to internal and external groups for design.
- Support the facility in piping, minor structural, and minor civil modifications with necessary drawing updates through Management of Change (MOC) action items.
- Support the facility with any drafting needs.
- Assist multiple engineering disciplines by producing timely design output. Understand project schedule constraints and information requirements to produce all design deliverables in a timely manner. This position will require the designer to multi-task and manage multiple designs at any time.
- Assist the facility inspection department with UT (thickness testing) location maps and isometric drawings for piping and equipment.
- Assist in evaluating and validating contractor performance.
- Participate in any planned and unplanned plant outages with the ability to work weekends, holidays and respond to callouts on a non-routine basis.
- Complete any additional responsibilities assigned by plant management.
- Owns workload and able to meet commitments with minimal oversight.
- Regularly present to plant leadership and other team members for design/drawing updates.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required. Associates degree in applied sciences in drafting and design technologies (or equivalent) is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of piping design and drafting experience. Relevant experience includes taking field dimensions and generating isometric drawings through the use of AutoCAD.
- High proficiency in AutoCAD / Navisworks software, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Kofax or other PDF editors.
- High proficiency in industry construction codes and practices as the pertain to piping design and fabrication. This includes expertise on ASME B31.3 process piping.
- Demonstrated knowledge of piping and vessel fabrication methods and processes.
- TWIC Required
- Project commissioning and startup experience.
- Capable of multi-tasking and managing multiple critical projects at a time.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, write, and speak in English.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team. Must be able to develop strong relationships with plant personnel, managers, engineering, maintenance, and construction personnel.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and respond to callouts on a non-routine basis.
- Excellent attention to detail and understanding of industry piping and structural standards
- Self-motivator who is results driven and continuously striving for improvement.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs, climb ladders and stairs.
- Walking, bending, stooping is required.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including the use of a respirator and harness.
- Must be willing to work from elevation and heights.
- Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ additional years of pipe fitting experience.
- Experience with Faro Focus laser scanner or other laser scanning devices, and experience generating Navisworks 3D models using the laser scanning device.
- Experience with drawing management databases, such as Adept.
- Experience assisting 3rd party engineering teams.
- Proficient in SAP.
- Relevant experience in chemical manufacturing facility. Experience officed within a plant working to support general plant needs and small capital projects.
