Overview:

Performs direct patient care including assessment, evaluation, and basic life support according to the goals of Mercy Health System, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, Standard of Care, and Employee Code of Conduct. EMT-I's may also perform clerical, dispatch, and maintenance duties as required. Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Responsibilities1. Ensures that the assigned ambulance and items of equipment are stocked, clean, maintained and ready to use. Operates an emergency vehicle, responding to emergency and non-emergency scenes and transporting patients to appropriate destinations and while at all times operating Mercy vehicles. Skilled in all aspects of emergency vehicles. Skills in all aspects of emergency vehicle response, medical rescue and other related EMS specialities including principles of incident management systems and Unified Command. Operates assigned ambulance, in compliance with Mercy MES low forces and ambulance operating policies.2. Assists in the assessment of the patient in order to promote optimal levels throughout pre-hospital care.3. Demonstrates proficiency in pre-hospital basic life support skills including: splinting suspected fractures, administering oxygen,etc. Assists Paramedics when necessary with advanced level skills as authorized by the Medical Director's medical protocols, procedures and policies.4. Demonstrates effective, concise, andappropriate verbal and non-verbal communications with receiving Physicians, nursing staff and other emergency services personnel. Documents information in a pertinent and concise manner, consistent with established policies and procedures. Demonstrates appropriate radio communications including; fluency, organization, and accuracy. Maintains confidentiality in all interactions.5. Acts as a patient advocate demonstrating techniques for providing a personalized, open, professional and caring atmosphere with respect for all patients.6. May be requested to function in a leadership/supportive role in accordance with established policies andprocedures which promotes interagency teamwork, maturity and professionalism.7. Promotes an environment supportive of cost-effective quality patient care.8. Assumes responsibility for continuing growth and education in his or her profession. Attends all mandatory meetings and required skill competencies to maintain currency for the position of Emergency Medical Technician.9. Demonstrates consistent, appropriate work habits and demeanor which contribute to the effective functioning of the department and Ministry. As a public safety team, member, assists in all active patient rescue activities by cooperating with other publicsafety support agencies.10. Performs ambulance service duties including: appropriate patient treatment documentation and other reports, cleaning and maintenance of ambulance service property.11. Observes universal precautions consistently.12. Wearsproper personal protective equipment when appropriate.13. Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code and Mercy EMS uniform policy. Attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance.14. Meets Health System attendance standards.15. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age to operate Mercy EMS vehicles.
  • Preferred Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certifications: Hazmat Awareness, BLS for Healthcare Providers, NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 within 90 days of hire.
  • Preferred Certification: ITLS or equivalent training.
  • Other: May be required to work differing shifts and schedules.Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Unimpaired mobility: Must be able to respond quickly to ambulance, must be able to access patients n difficult terrain, must beable to climb stairs, must be able to work in close anddangerous environments such as damaged vehicles, must be able with partner to carry equipment and patients. Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions. Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques. Must have correctable vision acceptable for day and nightoperation of emergency vehicles, must have color acuity adequate for determining of skin and blood color, and must be able to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes. Must be able to hear and understandinformation provided by patients, family or bystanders; must be able to hear breathing sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressure; must be able to differentiate separate conversations in active, distracting environments; must be able to hear and understand radio traffic when responding with lights and sirens. Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions, must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations, must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families and other emergency services personnel. Incumbents will be required successfully satisfy the physical demands of the role. This will include a pre-hire and annual fitness for duty test.Equipment Used: Mobile and portable communications equipment, Monitor/Defibrillator/Pacer, approved stretcher, stair chair, backboard, scoop type device, variety of bags and kits, assigned ambulance, computer, FAX, printer and other office related equipment
  • Licensure: EMT license for the state where employed, valid drivers license.
