Job Summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is in search of skilled and experienced Histology Technical Specialist for our Immunohistochemistry team. As a valued part of the UTSW team, you will serve as an expert working on high complexity testing with proficiency in system/test validation and writing technical policies and procedures.

This technical specialist position helps direct workflow for the IHC department while maintaining quality standards including QC, Validations, new antibody workups, statistic entry/analysis for accreditation compliance, etc. This shift is predominantly during the day to allow for meetings with the pathology team in order to optimize and review new antibody validations.

Work Location: Dallas Campus, Clements University Hospital (CUH)

Shift Requirement: Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM-6:00 PM. Flexibility to adjust hours as needed to fill the needs of the IHC department is desired. Possible rotating holidays and weekends.

Remote Work Option: Not available. Position is full-time onsite.



Minimum Experience and Education Requirements

  • Requires associate degree in a science and/or completion of histology training program or equivalent training as defined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Requires minimum of five (5) years of histology experience.
  • Requires experience in test /method validation and writing technical policies and procedures.
  • Requires active ASCP certification as Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL).


Preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Histotechnology or related field
  • QIHC (Qualification in Immunohistochemistry)
  • Competencies/Skills:

    • Automated IHC experience on Roche platform
    • Automated Special Stain experience on Roche platform
    • IHC optimization
    • ISH
    • Manual Special Stains
    • EM
    • Enzyme histochemistry

Job Duties

  • Job knowledge:

    • Independently perform work of considerable complexities in order to achieve general results by interpretation of policy and using ingenuity, initiative and good judgment, and/or precedents to work problems having broader implications.
    • Keep abreast of new technical developments.
    • Assist with implementation of new tests, equipment, programs and/or procedures in the assigned area(s) as needed.
    • Specialists learn new laboratory procedures and techniques and introduce them to their team.
    • Accountable for on-going training and professional development of staff.
    • Assist in developing performance standards.
    • Performs advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques.
    • Reruns work of others to confirm test results.
    • Re-evaluates methodology and makes recommended changes to assist in test interpretation.
    • Determines if further testing should be done on samples or if the test should be repeated.
    • Performs frozen sections, oversees and participates in the daily preparation of paraffin sections for staining of patient tissue, performs all level of special stain, histochemical and immunohistochemical stains in work area, quality assurance and quality control monitors, and equipment maintenance.
    • Knowledgeable about specialized histology and histochemical procedures, such as those of enzymes, polysaccharides, immunohistochemical and immuno fluorescents.
    • Performs duties of histotechnologist as necessitated by absence or peak workload.


  • Quality Orientation:

    • Anticipate and identify issues related to results of analysis and be able to troubleshoot through lab testing issues.
    • Assist in the creation and revision of laboratory policies and technical procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with Clinical Laboratory Services Quality assurance requirements.
    • Adherence to state, federal rules and regulations; ensures compliance with accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements.
    • Maintains continuing laboratory quality improvement/education program at institutional, local and national/international level.


  • Instrumentation:

    • Responsible as a primary source of information for maintaining current instrumentation.
    • Troubleshoots instrumentation and equipment problems during the shift to ensure uninterrupted testing.
    • Responsible for coordination of training in the methods and techniques of the appropriate specialty area with guidance of the manager/supervisor.


  • Productivity:

    • Able to work, process and analyze methods utilized in the laboratory and ensure goals and expectations are achieved by the department.
    • Performs special projects such as evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.
    • Achieves a minimum of 10 continuing education hours annually.
    • Continuously seek knowledge in and outside of functional area.
    • Actively participates in Performance Improvement Activities.
    • Serves on committees and task forces.
    • Orientates and instructs students and laboratory personnel in established clinical laboratory techniques, as required.
    • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations of regulatory accreditation agencies such as TJC, CAP, AABB and OSHA.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in laboratory areas with exposure to one or more disagreeable elements, such as bodily fluids, infectious agents, odors, chemicals, contagious diseases, etc.
