Experience and Education



  • Eight (8) years clinical pharmacist experience, 3 years pharmacy supervisory experience
  • Bachelor of Science or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Eligible for licensure by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP), and must obtain Texas license with TSBP within thirty (30) days date of hire
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA). Board Certification in a clinical pharmacy specialty required


Job Duties



  1. Develops and implements processes and programs to manage clinical pharmacy services and utilization management initiatives throughout the health system to provide quality and cost-effective pharmacy care to patients.
  2. Ensures the quality of the clinical pharmacy service lines through ongoing monitoring of medication safety and operational area performance. Develops new and/or revises existing procedures for consideration by the director. Maintains and implements knowledge of all rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, and laws in order to ensure that the division is in compliance.
  3. Manages and helps lead system committees, including Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and High Cost Drug and Utilization Committee.
  4. Coordinates medication utilization review and medication cost savings opportunities for clinical pharmacy service lines.
  5. Assists the Pharmacy Director with meeting administrative goals and objectives. In the absence of the Director or when requested, represents the pharmacy department knowledgeably and professionally at all meetings, conferences, committees.
  6. Meets or exceeds financial goals and objectives of the department. This includes monitoring and management of pharmacy budget to ensure appropriate expenses and revenues are being reconciled.
  7. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in pharmacy. Attends seminars/workshops, networks with colleagues, reads professional journals, actively participates in professional organizations, and integrates this knowledge as appropriate into the job in order to maintain a current knowledge of pharmacy technology and services and presents new ideas for improvement to services.
  8. Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the departmental strategic plan and standards of care.
  9. Mentors staff in good decision-making skills, and problem identification and resolution processes.
  10. Promotes staff ownership of the work environment encouraging process improvement actions.
  11. Maintains high visibility and availability through participation in departmental meetings and daily activities. Maintains effective communications with nurses, physicians and pharmacy staff providing leadership and support consistently. Contributes ideas and identifies opportunities for process improvements to better deliver prompt and safe patient care.
  12. Manages clinical activities, priorities, and problems, pharmacist staffing and workloads. Provides status report to pharmacy management effectively communicating issues, concerns, and suggestions as appropriate. Identifies opportunities for cost containment and promotes cost effective utilization of resources. Assists with budget preparation and daily financial activity specifically in relation to high cost drugs.
  13. Selects, trains, motivates, supervises, evaluates and makes recommendations for disciplinary actions up to and including termination, to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities. Ensures that assigned employees receive opportunities to further their knowledge. Identifies, develops and mentors employees with leadership potential.
  14. Actively teaches pharmacists, residents and pharmacy students in clinical practice. Actively enhances personal growth, development, and management skills by review of current literature, participating in continuing educational programs, in-services and meetings.
  15. Responds to patients, visitors, and other healthcare professionals requests for assistance, information, and needs in a timely and empathetic manner in order to improve overall pharmacy services. Strives to improve patient satisfaction, as measured by Press Ganey scores.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in general office or clinical area.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of the Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, or his/her designee.
