Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Campus Recreation and Wellness provides a comprehensive co-curricular experience for North Carolina Central University Students. Housed in the Division of Student Affairs Campus Recreation and Wellness is committed to providing programming to enhance the student experience while encouraging healthy habits. In addition Campus Recreation and Wellness serves the university community in providing programs to support an active lifestyle on the campus. Campus Recreation and Wellness supports programming in competitive sports, fitness, aquatics, and informal recreation.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, the Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness will provide leadership for a comprehensive collegiate recreational program designed for 10,000 students, faculty, and staff to expand their knowledge of and participation in recreational activities, which foster healthy lifestyles, sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership. Direction of a campus-wide recreation and wellness program include the following areas: fitness programs, intramural sports, sport clubs, aquatics, informal recreation, membership and special events. The Director supervises professional and support staff as well as provides direction to student staff. Additionally, the Director develops and maintains all campus recreation budgets and guides revenue generation to meet operations. Moreover, the Director will direct the operation of the department and is responsible for the fiscal, facility, and programmatic operation of all recreational facilities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrate extensive knowledge in managing a comprehensive competitive sports program on a college campus. Demonstrate knowledge of officiating principles. Ability to teach and train staff Understanding of university policies and procedures. Observant, dependable, responsible and flexible in handling related tasks. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people. Handle situations with fairness and tact. Make quick and accurate decisions. Possess excellent verbal and written skills. Be tactful, fair, efficient and friendly when dealing with patrons and co-workers. Identify potential risk hazards. Excellent organizational skills, detail orientated, ability to set priorities and objectives to achieve set goals. Strong commitment to team work, customer service, demonstrate ethical leadership, and committed to student development. Demonstrate organizational skills and planning skills. Ability to coordinate, organize and anticipate details for special events and programs. Working knowledge student development theory and ability to write and assess learning outcomes.
Minimum Education/Experience
The ideal candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to professional and student development. A Master Degree in Higher Education, Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Management or related field or A PhD in higher education and administration. A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in recreation and wellness administration. Requires flexibility and some work on nights and weekends. Must either possess First Aid and CPR certifications and American Red Cross Instructor trainer certification or be able to obtain them within 6 months of employment. The ideal candidate will have experience in a university setting, and must demonstrate a strong commitment to professional and student development.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction to Campus Recreation, Wellness and Student Health. The director must exemplify knowledge of collegiate health and wellness while providing direction to professional staff. The director is responsible for providing direction and vision for the departments and program area coordination. The director is responsible conducting evaluations and assessment of each staff member. Assure staff development and training to continually meet the changing campus needs.


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Director is responsible leading the departments in risk management practices. Ensure a comprehensive risk management is in place and staff is trained. Consult with University Police and Safety on reviewing and updating the plan to comply with university policies. Adhere to all university polices regarding personnel and risk management.


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Serves as the spokesperson for Student Health and Campus Recreation services and goal; serves as liaison between Student Health and Campus Recreation and the University administrative; represents Student Health and Campus Recreation on university committees and advisory groups, state, and national committees and to public in matters pertaining to constituent issues.

Provide opportunity for professional in training and serve as an academic resource for student and staff pursuing careers as recreation professionals. Develop and implement operational policies regarding Student Health and Campus Recreation. Direct the preparation of the departments budgets and insure the department needs are met, implementing a budget planning process that insures the most effective use of resources. Maintain appropriate administrative policies and structure; and requires staff competencies which assure the fulfillment of stated goals.
