Overview

TRC is currently interviewing for an Environmental Technician for our Environmental Division in Blacksburg, Virginia. As a Field Technician for our Environmental Services Division, you'll be part of a highly trained and experienced team that performs environmental compliance, permitting, remediation, and due diligence for landfill, industrial, and institutional projects.

This is an entry-level position (1-3 years) that performs field work such as logging numerical and visual observations, collecting samples of site matrices, preparing and packing samples, recording test results, performing photo documentation, and routine administrative support functions for the office.

The Environmental Technician will work on a wide range of environmental projects in a team support role. Operate equipment, instruments and systems used in the collection of data associated with the prevention, control, assessment, and remediation of environmental contaminants including waste treatment and site remediation. In addition, position will include assisting project managers with soil and groundwater sampling, gas monitoring, performing environmental site assessments, data analysis and report preparation.

Work will be focused on specific environmental projects under the direction and supervision of the Project Manager and Field Services Coordinator.

  • Perform basic environmental monitoring and remediation work in the field and office settings.
  • Provide written documentation of field activities to field services coordinator or project manager.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures and directions in field and office settings.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate completion of assigned tasks, field activities, and field reports.
  • Responsible for maintaining project files for assigned projects and providing project support.
  • Conduct maintenance on pumps, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Understand, participate, and follow Health & Safety program and plans.
  • Maintain safe working environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of related work experience.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with MS-Office work products and associated computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment across multiple organizational locations.
  • Strong safety focus and work ethic.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot field and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to collect and tabulate accurate observations of site conditions and collected media.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and take initiative to perform corrective action.
  • Responsive and flexible.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to travel including extended out-of-town stays of varying durations.

Preferred technical skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
  • OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER training preferred - will be provided by Firm if not already trained.
  • Understanding of field work tasks such as soil sampling, groundwater sampling, well installation, soil-vapor sampling, gas monitoring, site reconnaissance, and subcontractor oversight
  • Technical competence with repairing and troubleshooting various pumps and instrumentation.

  • Must be able to work outside in variable weather and field conditions.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • This position requires long-term standing and perhaps repetitive motions. You must have the ability to use your hands to handle; reach, climb or balance; crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit.
  • You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day or stay out of town during the week.
  • Some overtime and weekend work may be required with this position.

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
