General Responsibilities |
Howard Community College is seeking motivated, creative, flexible, collaborative, and visionary full-time American Sign Language faculty candidates with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching American Sign Language and Deaf culture at the beginning and intermediate levels to a diverse student population. Criteria include evidence of teaching excellence both in online and face-to-face modes; strong communication and interpersonal skills in a multicultural environment; strong organizational and leadership skills to provide discipline-level coordination; and an appreciation for the community college philosophy and mission. |
Work Performed |
The incumbent will be required to participate in college and/or community service. Daytime, evening, and weekend courses are taught at
HCC across all platforms: face-to-face, online and hybrid. We are looking for a colleague with the ability to engage students and to instruct using a range of up-to-date teaching methods and pedagogies.
The successful candidate will teach 30 credit hours per year (fall and spring semesters) and provide a minimum of five office hours per week during fall and spring semesters.

ASLTA certification (American Sign Language Teachers Association) or Native or near-native proficiency in

* Knowledge of best practices in
ASL pedagogy.
* Knowledge of and extensive personal/professional experiences within the Deaf community.
* Deaf individuals are encouraged to apply.
* College level teaching experience
* Online language teaching experience
* Understanding of
ACTFL standards and assessment practices
* Experience in curriculum development for face-to-face and online language teaching
* Experience using Canvas web platform for teaching (preferred) |
