Kleinschmidt has a full-time opening for a Senior Dam Safety Engineer to manage people, projects, and client relationships related to dam safety design of hydroelectric, fisheries, and water resources projects focused in the Pacific-Northwest region. Preferred locations for the individual to be aligned with our office locations in Portland, OR and Redmond or Bellingham, WA. Our flexibility and core value of relationships allows us to offer employees the opportunity to work in an office, or remotely, based on their personal needs.

Salary: $140,000-$160,000/year (based on experience)

Who You Are

A licensed Professional Engineer with a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 13 years' experience in dam safety engineering and a focus in structural, geotechnical, or hydrologic and hydraulic engineering. Experience with federal and state regulation of hydroelectric and non-hydroelectric projects is required. Possess excellent problem-solving skills and capable of working collaboratively with clients and team members in a dynamic, multidisciplinary consulting firm.

Skilled Independent Consultant: Approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to conduct Part 12 Dam Safety Inspections or the ability to receive this designation.

Relationship-focused: Passion for mentoring junior-level staff and being part of a cohesive team. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team while applying engineering skills from analysis and design through to construction. Ability to establish long-lasting relationships with clients to assist them in solving complex engineering challenges.

Leadership: A technical leader who can lead technical staff in project teams in terms of development, skill set capabilities, capacity, and utilization. Demonstrates good communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. Able to help lead and grow Kleinschmidt's dam safety practice in the Pacific-Northwest region.

Project Manager: Experience with project management, business development, and client management including management of multiple projects concurrently is desirable. The successful candidate will have experience managing a project team. Experience with managing multi-discipline projects is a plus.

Additional Requirements



  • Must possess permanent authorization to work in the United States and able to acquire authorization to work in Canada.
  • Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver's license.


About the Position

Technical Leadership



  • This position is in the dam safety engineering discipline and involves dealing with unique dam safety and compliance issues at existing hydroelectric and non-hydroelectric projects as well as new projects.
  • Travel for inspection, assessment, and analysis of a variety of types of water-retaining structures. Typical travel expected 10% of time.
  • Experience participating in and/or facilitating Part 12 inspections (both Periodic Inspections and Comprehensive Assessments), potential failure mode analyses, and screening level/semi-quantitative risk assessments is a plus.
  • The position includes the management of multi-discipline projects of varying sizes and complexities, focusing on dam safety or related projects.
  • Working directly with clients and contractors in the field during the planning, investigation, and construction phases of projects.
  • Mentorship of junior engineering staff.
  • Works to meet or exceed personal utilization target on a quarterly basis.
