Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)'s Emission Certification & Regulation Team (EC&R) helps support Hyundai and Kia vehicles, both light- and heavy-duty, to meet changing environmental, and emissions standards at the federal, state, and local levels. The EC&R team is responsible for coordination of the application of certification with EPA CoC (Certificate of Conformity) & ARB EO (Executive Order), including risk tracking to SOP (Start of Production) timing. The EC&R team also represents Hyundai Motor Company & Kia Corporation in leadership positions in regulatory-related industry and company activities, including industry trade groups; interfaces directly with regulators in the development of regulations, CFR (Code of Federal Regulation) and CCR (California Code of Regulation) and vehicle certification matters; and leads North American regulatory meetings with Hyundai & Kia affiliates.

HATCI's Regulation & Certification Department is currently seeking an Emission Certification & Regulation Manager at our Superior Township, MI facility just east of Ann Arbor that will:



  • Manage the U.S. environmental regulatory program by monitoring, analyzing, recommending action, and submitting corporate comments concerning U.S. legislation, regulations and trends concerning motor vehicles (including vehicle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, criteria emissions, zero-emission vehicles (ZEV), chemicals, fuel economy, batteries, and other environmental matters.)
  • Manage emissions certification activities for Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) affiliate light- and heavy-duty vehicles, with focus on accuracy and SOP timing. Regular communication with EPA and CARB certification teams required.
  • Prepare written comments in response to regulatory actions, provide verbal and written opinions to the trade groups for development of comments, participate in industry workgroup meetings, and respond to internal requests concerning regulatory or certification requirements.
  • Meet with government officials to discuss environmental regulatory initiatives, respond to requests for information from government entities, present regulatory information annually to HMG and to U.S. affiliates, review and recommend regulatory criteria emission, ZEV, CAFE, GHG, and certification plans for upcoming models.
  • Serve as company environmental representative for the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AFAI) and other industry trade groups.
  • Research and interpret U.S. environmental regulations and standards as they relate to HMG vehicles and provide recommendations in verbal and written reports.
  • Interface with corporate legal entities in the interpretation of current regulation and law regarding environmental related vehicle matters.
  • Supervise and mentor EC&R engineers responsible for emissions and state regulatory activity.
  • Set annual department goals and priorities, prepare annual budget and help determine staffing needs.
  • Create and present technical reports and perform additional projects as assigned.
  • Perform administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecards, vacation requests, travel requests, etc. And,
  • Travel up to 30% of time domestically and internationally is possible.

Basic Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in business management, Engineering, Public Policy, or similarly suitable discipline.
  • 8 years in Regulatory, Certification, or Compliance Program Management for a large enterprise
  • 10 years' experience in negotiation and consultation with industry and regulatory groups.
  • Valid driver's license & satisfactory driving record
