Our Team

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology, and engineering arm for all North American models of the Hyundai Motor Group. The electrified propulsion engineering and design (ePED) team is one of the groups in the electrified propulsion development division of HATCI responsible for providing quality, testing, validation, technical support, and component design for all types of vehicle propulsion systems.

The Position

We are looking for a talented, passionate and motivated Electric Vehicle Power Conversion Design Engineer for the EV power conversion design team in our Superior Township, MI facility. As a member of this new group, you will provide Hyundai, Genesis and Kia vehicles with design, simulation, quality enhancement and North American product support through technical expertise in EV power systems including chargers, inverters, DCDC converters, circuit protection and related systems. This position reports to the manager of electric vehicle power conversion engineering and design.

Core Responsibilities



  • Work as part of a design and development team on electric power conversion systems for EVs.
  • Cascade vehicle-level requirements into power conversion subsystem requirements using simulation, testing and measurement data analysis.
  • Work closely with vehicle and propulsion system design teams to define optimal inverter, charger, and DCDC converter architectures.
  • Develop new or modify existing power conversion system designs for new vehicle applications.
  • Benchmark competitor inverters, DCDC converters, charge controllers, and grid tie interfaces for cost, performance, efficiency, and quality.
  • Study existing EV power electronics system designs for opportunities for improvement in performance, quality, and cost.
  • Provide EV propulsion system engineering technical support for North American assembly plants.
  • Track, investigate, and implement solutions for EV power conversion system quality issues.
  • Engage with suppliers to review system and component functional requirements to design and produce power conversion systems for North American Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia products.
  • Conduct EV propulsion system research projects with universities and national labs to discover improved power electronics designs with lower cost.
  • Keep abreast of industry standards and innovative EV power electronics technology to establish and maintain competitive advantage.
  • Report benchmark results, quality issue resolution, and internal design project status to management in US and abroad.
  • Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)

Basic Qualifications



  • B.S. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related engineering field from an accredited university
  • 2+ years of experience developing high power electronics including inverter, charger, grid tie, or DCDC converters.
  • Demonstrated foundational knowledge of EV power conversion system principles and operation.
  • Experience with high power switching (IGBT and SiC/GaN MOSFET), filtering, EMI, high voltage safety and motor control methods.
  • Experience with data analysis and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with international technical experts in research and development headquarters.
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications



  • M.S. or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related engineering field
  • 5+ years of experience developing high power electronics including inverter, charger, grid tie, or DCDC converter design or testing.
  • Power electronics simulation experience using software such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSPICE, LTSpice, etc.
  • Experience in vehicle propulsion system related CAE simulations in the thermal, electrical, magnetic, or mechanical domains.
  • Knowledge and experience with embedded control of power electronic circuits
  • Working knowledge of related EV propulsion systems including batteries, electric motors, embedded controls power conversion systems, charging electronics and control systems
  • Familiarity with vehicle instrumentation and data acquisition, including calibration tools such as ETAS INCA
  • Working knowledge of vehicle communication networks (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.)
