Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI)'s Regulation & Certification Department is currently seeking a Vehicle Safety Regulatory Engineer for the Safety Certification & Regulation Team at our Superior Township, MI facility just east of Ann Arbor.

HATCI's Regulation & Certification Department helps support Hyundai and Kia vehicles to meet changing safety, environmental, and emissions standards at the federal, state, and local levels. Regulatory professionals research & analyze future regulatory trends to recommend internal action; guide the direction of company research; help to develop policy for public positions; and communicate with agencies such as National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The Safety Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Team is responsible for vehicle safety, technology, and other emerging issues for passenger cars and heavy (commercial) vehicles.

Essential duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:



  • Obtain information on Federal, State, and Canadian motor vehicle safety regulations under consideration.
  • Analyze proposed and finalized safety regulations for impact on Hyundai and Kia vehicles.
  • Prepare summaries of regulatory actions related to motor vehicle safety and technologies.
  • Prepare company policy positions on safety regulatory areas by coordinating between R&D and affiliated companies.
  • Prepare written comments and/or verbal testimony in response to government safety regulatory actions or inquiries.
  • Provide recommendations to engineering staff for action in response to upcoming safety requirements.
  • Track government, industry, and academic research related to motor vehicle safety.
  • Make recommendations for internal research to support government efforts.
  • Provide updates, summaries, and/or presentations related to motor vehicle safety trends, technologies, and upcoming requirements or regulations to internal stakeholders through meetings, presentations, and other media on a regular basis.
  • Participate in industry technical work groups and committees.
  • Coordinate with Canadian, or other market, counterparts as necessary.
  • Support preparation of weekly, monthly, and yearly reports describing recent regulatory efforts and political activities
  • Perform additional functions related to motor vehicle safety regulations and technologies as assigned.
  • Perform administrative functions such as purchasing requests, travel requests, etc.
  • Travel up to 20% of time domestically and internationally.

Experience and Skills:



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, other analytical / technical fields, and/or public policy
  • Experience with regulations and regulatory processes pertaining to motor vehicle safety at an automotive OEM, supplier, or government agency such as NHTSA preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, high integrity, and ethical behavior
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record
