Description

The Data Center Engineer plays a crucial role in server engineering, participating in the planning of maintenance and the development of strategies for various platforms. This role requires a good understanding of Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, VMware, Active Directory, Cisco UCS, and intermediate IT troubleshooting.

* Assist in planning and implementing hardware and software upgrades.

* Help monitor and maintain server clusters.

* Work within specialized client/server environments.

* Assist in maintaining and configuring DNS and Active Directory services.

* Help manage multiple data storage systems.

* Automate routine tasks using Python or PowerShell under supervision.

* Document server environments for change control and technical repository.

* Support file and block data storage and backup systems

Qualifications

Minimum Education



  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science (Required) Or Relevant experience in data center engineering beyond the minimum required work experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a 1-1 ratio i.e. one year of relevant work experience equals one year of required education.


Minimum Work Experience



  • 5 years Hands-on data center and systems engineering experience (Required)


Required Skills/Knowledge



  • Excellent written and oral communication skills


Required Licenses and Certifications



  • One or more of: MSCE, VMware VCP, AIX, Citrix, EMC (Preferred)


Functional Accountabilities

Systems Management



  • Provide administration for multiple servers and hybrid cloud; ensure server availability.
  • Perform network operating system and application software installation/upgrades.
  • Configure server hardware and network communications; assist in the development of configuration standards.
  • Monitor system performance and storage usage; document data backup procedures and provide systems performance and management statistics and reports.
  • Management of system trend analysis and configuration.


System Integration/ Implementation



  • Forecast and maintain server and storage capacities.
  • Integrate hardware and operating systems software into existing network technologies.
  • Assist with integration of various network operating system environments (Novell, AIX, OS400, VMS, NetWare, Windows NT).
  • Implement client/server solutions to support various application's suites; support the implementation of applications into production.
  • Participate in Installs, moves, adds and changes (IMAC).
  • Observe and meet deadlines.


System/Project Planning



  • Implement approved hardware and operating systems designs and configurations.
  • Participate in Disaster Recovery design and planning.
  • Assist in the creation of test plans and scripts for back-up and recovery solutions.
  • Assist in the development of disk storage solutions.
  • Performs hardware and network diagnosis.
  • Capable of devising ways to accomplish a difficult purpose; ability to recognize a problem and construct an effective solution compatible with overall company operations.


Technical Proficiency



  • Demonstrate understanding of standard networking protocols and NDS technology.
  • Maintain professional expertise through continuing education at conferences, seminars, user group meetings & review of current literature.
  • Pursue industry standard technical certifications.
  • Provide technical support and consultation to IS staff.


IT Best Practices



  • Actively participate in the Department's ITIL processes
  • Participate in the Incident Management process; proactively work to resolve Incidents and meet service requests; document relevant data on requests and resolutions in agreed upon timeframe.
  • Escalate incidents according to procedures; convert incidents to change requests as needed.
  • Participate in the Change Control process; complete change tasks and update them with relevant information and status changes.
