Summary:
Cardiac Surgical Technologist

Under the close supervision of a professional nurse and/or physician perform a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team such as scrubbing on all types of surgical procedures lifting and positioning patients cleaning instruments restocking supplies etc.

Responsibilities:
Assists in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures ensuring that all necessary instruments equipment and supplies are available and properly stored.

Assists nursing personnel and orderlies in lifting and positioning patients for surgical procedures.

Scrubs on all types of surgical procedures and passes in instruments sutures and sponges; assists in holding retractor and suctioning patients and anticipates needs of the physician.

Responsible for maintaining strict aseptic techniques in the operating room area reporting and correcting any *breaks* in such techniques.

Cleans surgical instruments and equipment after surgical procedures by operating sterilization equipment (i.e. autoclaves and ultrasonic) and wrapping and storing such equipment and instruments after they are cleaned.

Removes soiled linen and supplies from the operating room after surgical procedures and assists in the general cleaning of the area. Obtains clean linen and supplies and sets up room for next procedure.

Obtains special equipment and supplies from the appropriate storage areas.

Removes unused supplies from the surgery cart and stores them in the appropriate area for use.

Stocks surgical supplies in the operating rooms and storage areas and performs other duties as assigned.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Associates degree from a 2 year accredited surgical technologist program required.

Knowledge of various surgical procedures in order to assist and anticipate physician needs.

Knowledge of various surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:
Nine to twelve months experience with increasing responsibility preferred in order to be familiar with all surgical procedures performed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Required to work in a sterile environment and regularly exposed to cuts and punctures from surgical instruments and equipment burns from autoclaves anesthesia gases as well as odors and communicable diseases from patients.

Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods of time during surgical procedures.
