The nurse practitioner is a professional registered nurse with advanced education and training. Maintains responsibility for providing care to patients through written verification of an agreement to a collaborative relationship with a licensed physician, utilizing the nursing process. Assists and performs surgical procedures, participates in providing postoperative care and follow-up, and performs other medical/surgical services on patient divisions or in the emergency department as may be requested. The scope of activities performed by the nurse practitioner should fall within the area of competence of his/her supervising physician. The nurse practitioner shall not perform any services which his/her supervising physician is not qualified to perform. These activities shall in all instances be within the rules and regulations of the board of medicine and shall be in accordance with Wheeling Hospital's policy and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Graduate of a registered nurse program. 2. Master's degree in nursing required with national certification as a nurse practitioner. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Functions as first and second assist on major and minor surgery as directed by the supervising physician in the hospital. 2. Rotates on-call as required for emergent surgeries and responds to trauma pages in the emergency department providing assistance as necessary. 3. Rotates on-call as required on medical or surgical service performing patient evaluation, informing attending physician of pertinent findings, and assisting in developing diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plan. 4. Performs history and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients in the hospital if appropriate. Establishes a presumptive diagnosis, the general workup of the patient (by ordering appropriate laboratory studies) and be responsible under the physician's supervision for the management of the patient's problems following diagnosis. 5. Evaluates patients in the emergency room under supervision of the emergency/trauma center physician and informs attending physician of pertinent findings and assist in developing diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plan. 6. Assists in hospital rounds. Makes complete entries in the medical record, writes record progress notes, and records verbal orders on the order sheet, relayed from the supervising physician. The order will be reviewed and countersigned by the supervising physician or his designated physician. 7. Initiates appropriate laboratory, radiologic, and special examinations for tests required for the evaluation of illness. 8. Performs clinical procedures under the direction and/or supervision of the supervising physician. Procedures which are permitted must be noted in the individual job description and approved by the supervising physician, the departmental directors, the medical executive committee, and the board of directors of the hospital. 9. Manages medical emergencies and initiate appropriate therapy until the arrival of a physician. 10. Communicates with patients regarding their problems, under the instructions of the supervising physician. 11. Provides counseling and instruction to patients regarding the patient's health related problems. 12. Prepares and dictates discharge summaries of the hospitalization of the patient if assisted with the patient's surgery and made rounds on the patient. 13. Assists in necessary preparations prior to surgery. 14. Participates in appropriate continuing medical education programs. 15. Maintains annual CPR certification. 16. Assists in the training of health personnel in certain diagnostic, therapeutic, and clinical techniques, as directed by the supervising physician. 17. Performs and dictates discharge summaries of the hospitalization of the patient, if assisted with the patient's surgery and made rounds on the patient. 18. Performs all other duties as assigned.
