Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Director, Occupational Therapy.
In this role, the successful candidate Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing management and specialist staff of clinical and educational programs in the Occupational Therapy Department. Assists with the development and implementation of goals, policies and standards for occupational therapy services. Formulates, integrates, and implements policies, procedures, programs by identifying program needs, and planning required personnel, space and materials to provide for required needs of patient population. Assists in planning specific program proposals by compiling, evaluating, analyzing, integrating, and interpreting data on program and rehabilitation needs. Works with a multidisciplinary team to achieve the mission of research, education and patient care
Job Responsibilities:
- Supervision of Patient care activities - Assesses the need for new program in the areas of patient care, staff development, research, and education. Recommends need for programs to meet defined departmental needs. Plans and organizes personnel, equipment and space needs for implementation of programs, deemed necessary and approved.
- Orientation and training of staff/Evaluation and Counseling of staff - Conducts personnel interviews of prospective staff members for employment. Recommends staffing assignments for new employees and rotation assignments for staff. Assists in collection of data and rational for changes in departmental staffing patterns.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Clinical training of fieldwork and non fieldwork students. Assists in the individual units in the development of goals, standards, and criteria to be utilized in quality assurance programs. Assists in the implementation of programs as needed. Maintains a relationship with the Medical Center Quality Assurance Department to conduct programs. Maintains an awareness of issues that involve quality assurance as set by internal departments at the Medical Center and external agencies.
- Assists in the format development and collection of statistical data relating to the delivery of patient care activities. Assists in the format development, information collection and preparation of reports required for administration, physicians, and outside agencies. Assists in the written preparation of developing patient care programs, educational activities and research endeavors. Completes all documentation reports in a thorough and concise manner.
- Serves on medical center committees as indicated by Director and Administration. Establishes lines of communication with management personnel of other departments, administrators, and physicians to enhance and facilitate departmental operations. Assists in the planning and implementation of programs for visitors and foreign trainees.
- Communication/relationships with others - Evaluates the need for equipment recommended for use in the department. Maintains a supply of equipment necessary for departmental use and resale to patients. Establishes prices for resale equipment for patients and revises then in accordance with Medical Center guidelines and procedures. Determines the need for repair of departmental equipment and takes steps to make repairs according to established procedures. Establishes a dialogue with vendors, purchasing department, manufacturer, etc. in order to be current on equipment available and methods of procurement.
- Orients new staff members to departmental policies and procedures upon hire. Plans and conducts departmental in-service programs, which are pertinent to the entire staff. Counsels staff members who are exhibiting performance difficulties as documented in performance evaluations. Assists in the preparation of performance evaluations of the supervisory staff; monitors their performance on an ongoing basis.
- Maintains a working relationship with the Clinical Coordinators of the schools who have contractual agreement. Establishes the number of students, schedule, and assignment of students to the department. Establishes and implements the clinical programs for the students in order to provide learning experiences appropriate to their academic preparation. Establishes and implements the procedures for collecting and reporting information concerning the clinical performance of the students to appropriate parties. Determines involvement of departmental personnel in student program. Coordinates activities of all departmental personnel in the student program. Attends and participates in all necessary meetings, conferences, seminars, etc., pertinent to the student program. All clinical education for Rusk Rehabilitation for Occupational Therapy is coordinated by the Clinical Director of OT.
- Implementation and documentation of treatment plan and interventions - Assists in preparation of the department yearly budget. Reviews, on a monthly basis, the departmental MFR with the Director. Maintains an up-to-date awareness of reimbursement policies and procedure of third party payers. Makes recommendation for cost containment procedures on a regular basis.
- Development of research initiatives for the Dept of Occupational Therapy throughout Rusk Rehabilitation sites. Assess clinical practice to initiate or support the continuation of research that will lead to publications, presentations and departmental funding. Provide mentorship to staff in regards to development of research proposals and IRB submissions.
- Works with management team and Site Directors to ensure clinical programming is based on the latest evidence based practices while achieving staff productivity and visit volume targets.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor or Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy with a post-professional OTD required. Minimum of 7 years progressive management experience in Occupational Therapy. Excellent communication skills. Licensed in New York State as an Occupational Therapist with an active AOTA membership..
Required Licenses: Occup Thrpst License-NYS
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D in Occupational Therapy or other health care area. Prior management experience to include supervising management/supervisory level positions. Prior experience with management of multi-site occupational therapy services.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $138,098.48 - $230,164.48 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
