JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking a highly motivated Automotive Security Engineer to join our Vehicle Investigation and Cybersecurity (VIC) Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will work at the forefront of technical innovation with some of the best in the industry and ensuring our automotive software/hardware engineering teams are developing the latest security and diagnostic upgrades to military ground vehicle assets.

You will:

  • Test vehicle systems with a focus on applying cybersecurity industry standards and best-practices.
  • Conduct rigorous vehicle testing procedures to ensure reliability of data networks and Electronic Control Units (ECUs).
  • Program and troubleshoot embedded devices within the vehicle architecture.
  • Utilize knowledge of Controller Area Network (CAN) bus systems to facilitate effective communication between Electronic Control Units (ECUs).
  • Investigate vehicle network traffic to assess vulnerabilities and fault conditions.
  • Analyze vehicle data to optimize performance and identify potential subsystem maintenance concerns.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and integrate new technologies and systems into existing ground vehicle platforms.
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in automotive engineering and apply this knowledge to your work
  • Document all phases of the engineering process, from initial design to final testing.

Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 5 years of related experience. A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering is preferred.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Ground vehicle engineering, including hands-on experience with vehicle testing
  • CAN bus systems and their application in vehicle communication networks
  • Programming for embedded devices, mainly C and C++. Automotive embedded framework experience a plus (AUTOSAR)
  • Debugging embedded device software and hardware using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Vehicle dynamics, electronic systems, and data communication between ECUs
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Familiarity with vehicle data collection and simulation software such as Intrepid Vehicle Spy and Vector Canoe

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$109,300.00 - $164,000.00
