JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Signal Processing Department in the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking a motivated and talented Signal Processing Engineer to research, develop, analyze, and deliver new capabilities for the processing of undersea platform sensor data.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design algorithms for vehicle guidance and control, including active waveform design, beamforming, broadband processing, passive multi-source angle estimation, acoustic communication, environmental adaptation, multi-target detection, tracking, and classification, and machine learning
  • Collaborate with real-time code developers and modeling and simulation analysts to integrate system software
  • Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals/objectives; may evaluate proposed or ongoing projects
  • Create opportunities to enhance technical methodology or content through expansion of existing or development of new efforts; may extend technology into new application areas; contribute or lead in intellectual development activities
  • Provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities; use peer network to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities

Higher level responsibilities include:

  • Understand broad strategic objectives and contribute to them; nurture and maintain relationships with major customers/grantors of external research and development grant funding
  • Collaborate with USO leadership, sponsors and the technical community to plan and execute programs advancing autonomous capabilities for current and future applications
  • Mentor assigned staff in the development of technical, project, and business development skills

This job can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon the successful candidate's education and experience. Minimum education and experience requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering or science related discipline plus five year's related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level positions.

This position will be filled as either Research Faculty or a Research and Development Engineer.

Required skills and experience include:

  • One or more of the following: MATLAB, Python, or C++
  • Signal processing,
  • Algorithm development

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • A Master's degree or a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science/Engineering
  • Vehicle guidance and control
  • Detection, communication
  • Target tracking and classification
  • Machine learning
  • Underwater acoustics

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$109,300.00 - $191,000.00
